How do I get Real Player (used for video displays) from hijacking Winamp's file associations? Everything was fine until I ran Real Player Basic, now everything is coming up RP when I select music selections from shoutcast. Winamp has been pushed aside. I have select the keep associations in Winamp's preferences, but to no avail.

Using Windows 2000 Prof.

Thanks.

First, open up realplayer and go to
View -> Preferences -> Upgrade tab

Click on "Re-associate", and it opens up a new window. Uncheck mp3, pls & m3u from the list and click on OK.
Now click on "Auto Restore Settings" and do the same thing.

Now open up Winamp and do the following. Go to OPTIONS -> PREFERENCES -> SETUP -> FILE TYPES and associate the files in the list. Then go to OPTIONS -> PREFERENCES -> SETUP -> AGENT and check "Enable Winamp Agent" and "Maintain file associations".

file associations

Thanks for the advice, having already done that several times, i uninstalled RP basic. Winamp after being reinstalled still does not play anything from Shoutcast. I get "playlist" line in my winamp playlist, and nothing. I guess is a problem with W2K/Winamp? My Windows98/ME are playing winamp and RP basic just fine. Any other place I can go to try solve the problem? Having unistalled and reinstalled Winamp twice, the problem remains. Winamp does not play anything. Thanks for helping.

This is a realplayer problem. It's "supposed" to let you choose which files you want to associate, and you should be able to disable them whenever you want, but in reality it's not so. Realplayer grabs everything, no matter what you do, even uninstalling it, as you just found out. I'll look for some more info - if I find some I'll post it here.
