I fucked my puter up pretty badly, I think. I installed Win2kPro, converted my HDD to NTFS, and everything was fine. Then my butthead brothers started using my computer - I know this because sometimes when I was at Afro's house and he was logged onto ICQ, I would see "myself" come online. The bastards didn't know HOW to use ICQ< and I was therefore "ignoring" everyone/anyone who wanted to ICQ me. Dickheads. Grr.
Soz, got sidetracked. Anyways... I went to the Administrative Tools CP thingy, fiddled around for a little while, and somehow managed to restrict access to only the Administrator - me. Fine. Good. No more stupid brothers fucking with my puter. Yay. But..... I decided to be a smartass, went back into the Admin Tools CP, fucked around some more, and now I can't logon to my own puter, even as Administrator. Fuck. Can anyone help me with this? I would call up Microsoft and ask for some "official" assistance, but my copy of Win2kPro was, uhh, acquired at a greatly reduced price. Burnt, if you will. ![]() Anyone know what I can do? I've tried all the alternative startup options - Safe Mode etc - but they all bring me back to the Logon screen, which I can't get past. I've tried mashing F1 thru F12 but to no avail, nothing happens. God damnit. Anyone??

And yes, it is a lucky thing it didn't work on your system. I've never tried it on a win2k system, but it's worked on NT and 98 for me before. Anyway, try a boot disk, using command prompt (yet more mashing of the F1-12 keys), or attempting to install DOS or Win 3.1 (these use boot/startup disks, conveniently bypassing a previously installed version of Windows). btw, try back slash ("\") instead. I can't quite recollect which kind of slash it is. |

1. Ta, I'll try the / and \ options when I get home.
2. Reinstalling is great in theory... the only problem is that the Win2kPro setup.exe will NOT run from outside of Windows, and I can't install Win98SE to run it from there, because my HDD is now in NTFS format, which is only recognised by NT/2k. Believe me, I've tried. 3. FUCK. I'll try the back/slash things, and the "User" one, but I was really hoping someone like sawg/Winsane/PP/bonj might have been in this rather sticky situation before and could therefore guide me in the right direction. 4. God damnit. Thanks for the (possibly helpful) assistance fellas. I'll try this stuff out and report back in a day or two. Hmm. -jaz

Could try installing linux, pulling all the files you need of the partition, formatting the damn thing back to fat32 and installing win98, then just use partition magic or similar to get rid of linux again...
Needs a fair amount of space though.... |

Can't ya just replace user.dat with user.da0 from the dos prompt?
cd c:\windows copy user.dat user.bak (to create a backup file) copy user.da0 user.dat Or edit user.dat and remove the relative reg settings c:\>edit Don't take my word for it though, ya might want to wait for exact confirmation from one of the experts you listed above ![]() However, I don't understand how comes you don't know your own username & password logon

Rather sticky situation you got here, I locked myself out of my Mac once, which is a main reason I got the computer I have now. It was an oldie, and I somehow turned on a screensaver password, and there was no prompt to set the password. Not knowing there was a password on, I let it go into screensaver mode and then I couldn't do jack shit. Somehow the screensaver turned on instantly whenever I turned it on too, so another problem. Don't bother offering suggestions, I eventually figured out how to fix it, but since now that it's in a box in the corner of the furnace room, it's not really an issue anymore.

when you boot up.. can't you change passwords from there (you know.. the bw screen before the win2kpic loading sheet)?
I'd like to meet a mad man who makes it all seem sane To work out all these troubles and what there is to gain |

Iomega, right now there is a glut in the Memory supply- I would say take advantage of current market conditions: buy a new 30/40GB hard drive, and turn your "lemons into lemonade"

You could boot from a DOS bootdisk and run X:\i386\winnt.exe off of the the install CD
might need to Fdisk to kill the partitions |

Red: Reformatting isn't an option because I don't want to lose my stuff.
DJ Egg: I haven't "lost" my password, I have changed the Administrative settings to make it so that the "Logon" operation is disabled - I know my password, but when I enter it, it says "Interactive logon is disabled" or some shit like that. At any rate, thanks to some pointers from Bonj, Domain and DarkRane, I've got some more ideas about what to do. I'll reply to this as soon as I try everything out. ![]() Thanks everyone. -jaz "My heart hates uggos." –J.D. |

Any joy yet?
Did you try restoring the backup registry? It must store the settings somewhere! Either in: User.dat / system.dat / win.ini / system.ini / config.sys / protocol.ini Can any Win2k user confirm this? Surely you can just edit the relevant file in DOS. Anyway, did you say whether you had a CD-ROM Setup Boot Disk or not? If so, enable "seek floppy boot" in BIOS, and Boot Sequence = A,CD-ROM,C Good luck mate! |

Sorry, got to ya too late!
(1) Could've tried guest logon - maybe it would have worked? (2) You should *really* obtain a copy of Partition Magic 6 from the same source where you got Win2k and create the 2-diskette set. I think you could have used it to convert your NTFS back to FAT32, and at least that way you would not have lost your data.

Well,
a guest account wouldnt work anyway! All you have is guest rights and what good is that If you cant login as administrator you might as well not have the computer - hehe Well what you should really do is create an account for your f*cking brothers - or ask them to use the guest account |

Tariq's got the right idea - I've installed win98se, and made two users - "Hugh" (for me, duh) and "Not Hugh" (for them). My one has everything I need in my Start Menu, and has my DUN password saved and connects automatically.
Their one (and the one it goes to if they choose "Cancel" instead) has the following things in their Start Menu: Programs -> CD Player, Winamp, Internet Explorer. When they go to IE, they need to ASK ME ( ) for the DUN password.MUWHAHAHAHHAHA. I am God|zorTASTIC! Nice to hear from you btw. Tariq, it's been a while.

But since you are using Win98 SE - I guess your hard must be FAT32, That also means your brothers can access anything they want on your hard disk.
Pretty Unfortunate if they delete any of your personal file or etc.. What I do is I run Win2K advanced server. All my folders except for my mp3 folder, games and the like . have administrator rights, This way I am in command - No one can do anything to the machine unless I allow it hehehe isnt this world a dirty placeTariq |

Hehehehe, the thing is, they probably would end up deleting some of my stuff, if they knew how to get into Windows Explorer. They only know how to use the Start Menu, and since that only has Winamp, CD Player and Internet Explorer in it, they can't get to Windows Explorer, which I find endlessly hilarious.
My stuff is scarily safe.
