Winamp agent?

I understand where the icon of the 'Winamp Agent' is. Also that it is a process which is always running, even when Winamp is not running. I also know I can prevent it from running using 'msconfig'.

The questions I can't seem to find the answers to are:

What exactly does this Winamp agent do for me if I never use it to open Winamp? In other words, is there any reason I should keep it running at startup if I never click on it?

Why is the 'bookmarks' item there?

It maintains associations when Winamp is not running, and not much else.

Bookmarks gives you quick access to your bookmarked items.

I'm hoping that benski includes some crash cleanup stuff i proposed into their. His response was that it was certainly do-able.

I use the agent as a quick icon i can use 100% of the time to access winamp.

Winamp is set to not have its own systray icon, or taskbar icon, and with the agent inheriting winamp's menu when loaded, it basically means winamp is always in that one place no matter if its loaded or not.

But yeah, would be nice for agent to offer more benefits.

The recommended/easiest method to enable & disable is to checkmark/uncheck "Enable Winamp Agent" in: Winamp > Prefs > File Types.

You'll also see an explanation of what it is & does there, and two further options to 'show systray icon' and 'maintain file associations'.

Well, when you look there it's pretty obvious. But since you can't seem to find it, take a look below. I've made it even more obvious by outlining it in red for you...

Yep... which means that you obviously UNchecked it in the installer options, since it's checkmarked by default there.

btw... the latest and greatest version of Winamp is now 5.52, so I recommend installing that version and then leaving the agent checkmarked in the installer options.

*Note: based on your screenshot, it appears that you've UNchecked lots of other options in the installer as well. So, perhaps rethink what you need and don't need when you reinstall. For instance, wouldn't Global Hotkey and Media Library support be a good thing to have? But, then again, it's your decision.

If only we could run the winamp agent without having to look at it on the system tray. I have other icons there that may actually need to be clicked, and having the winamp agent there wastes spaces. Then if I open winamp I have TWO winamp icons. It's just madness I say.

Winamp > Ctrl+P > General Preferences > File Types > in the Winamp Agent box uncheck 'Show system tray icon'

-- or/and --

If you don't what the Winamp's "regular" sys-tray icon
Winamp > Ctrl+P > General Preferences > under 'Show Winamp in:' uncheck 'System tray'

Prefs > File Types > Winamp Agent > 'Show system tray icon'

or

Prefs > General Prefs > 'Show Winamp in :' > select...

If you reinstall Winamp 'over the top' of a previous version you may have to reset the tray item from the Prefs > File types... , or do a system reboot.

Hello,

Should Winamp Agent not be turned into a thin client. In this case individuals like myself who have multiple PC in a house could use the agent as their main GUI. Therefore the agent would load all the Playlists on each the PCs without having to re-build them. This would reduce the size of mem used and better control the media.

Furthermore, Is there a way to delete duplicates in the library?
Thanks
