Shouldn't have updated?

Just today I updated winamp to 5.24 and it now crashes randomly while playing. Unistalled and reinstalled quite a few times, even tried and older version but that did not work anymore either.



AMD Athlon XP 2800
2.09GHz, 1 GB RAM
ATI All-in-wonder 9600 video
Nvidia nForce audio
Running Windows XP home SP2
DirectX 9
Winamp 5.24 lite, shared user settings.

What version did you upgrade from?
Was it also the Lite version, or did you install 5.24 Lite straight on top of an old Full version?

Did you try a clean install (which involves uninstalling, totally wiping the Winamp dir, then reinstalling)?

I'm not sure what version I had been using before, but it had not been bugging me to update so I'd assume it was the most recent. It was the lite version. And yes, I did a clean install.

And does it still happen if you disable the 3rd-party
MSN Messenger Status Plugin v0.22 [gen_msn.dll] ?

eg. with Winamp closed, go to the Winamp\Plugins folder
and rename that file to something like gen_msn.dll.off
or just move the file out of the plugins folder.

Also note that there's a newer version available of that plugin

Talking of which, there's also a newer version available of the Jump to File Extra plugin (gen_jumpex), however, I'm pretty certain that the older version isn't the cause of the problem, and more than likely it's the msn plugin to blame.

Funny though, how everything was working fine until I updated. Don't worry I have learned my lesson!

In an attempt to appease the winamp gods, I just did another clean uninstall/reinstall. It crashed before one song had ended.

I just had it running for a good half hour before crashing. I suppose this is improvement?

Are there any international / unicode characters in the filenames or tags in your files?

Does installing and switching to DirectSound output make a difference?
DirectSound is recommended over waveOut on WinXP/2k.

Do you have the equalizer enabled?


(Also, we are just trying to help to find the cause. Comments about learned lessons, Winamp god appeasements and supposed improvements don't really help.)

Switch to DirectSound Output instead of WaveOut
(you'll need to reinstate winamp\plugins\out_ds.dll first)

Try the DirectSound Output tweaks.
Make sure nforce output device is selected.
Try with/without "allow hardware acceleration" checkmarked.
If it only crashes on track change, try reducing "buffer-ahead on track change" slider to 0ms (Buffering tab)


Can you also confirm that the following files exist:

Winamp root folder
nscrt.dll (7.10.0.0) (24 May 2006 - 344kb)

Winamp\System folder
jnetlib.w5s (21 June 2006 - 15kb)
tags.w5s (21 June 2006 - 15kb)
playlist.w5s (21 June 2006 - 29kb)

Are there any other files in this folder?
(there may be aacPlusDecoder.w5s and xml.w5s)


All that said and done, I'm really not sure what's causing the problem.
I just manually installed 5.24 Lite (by extracting the required files from the installer using 7Zip) into a new dir, and it's been playing mp3's now for about 2 hours. No crash, no problems whatsoever.

Probably not relevant to the problem at hand, but you should probably fix these entries anyway (close all browser, explorer, email, office, etc windows; in the HJT Scan Results window, checkmark ONLY the entry/entries in bold text listed below, and click "Fix Checked")

These two are probably useless/broken (as suggested by 'no name' and 'no file')

The 2nd one is related to Microsoft Money Viewer,
whereas a google search for the first one is inconclusive...

Quite a few odd characters yes... is that bad?
I just switched to DirectSound and it doesn't seem to have had made a difference either.
Normally I do have it enabled but I haven't since reinstalling.

I wasn't trying to sound ungrateful, it was simply my attempt to see things in a humourous light? ^_^ Sorry.

All of the files mentionned exist. I'm going to try your suggestions right now, though it is crashing randomly in the middle of songs, not on track change. It doesn't seem to matter either whether or not I am using other programs or not.

I was in kind of a bad mood at the time, so I interpreted as such, sorry...

As for the odd characters, don't know if it's related to that. Since you're saying that the error occurs while the track is playing (and not on track change), I guess not...

I was thinking maybe some running process is interfering and preventing Winamp from buffering properly, but I didn't notice anything in your log.

Are your files stored on a local hard disk? (and not on a network drive or something?)

You were right that the issue sounds very much like what's posted here (you didn't include error details there, so I wasn't sure if the issue was the same, which is why I suggested to start a new thread...).
I compared your HijackThis log with the one mister_no posted, but didn't find any relevant similarites. Apart from the fact you both have an ATI video card, though I doubt that's related to the issue...

Anyone else ideas?

hey kids... im having the same issue pretty much. have any builds been released that haven't been announced? anyway, my install was a direct update over my previous version. i know i need to try clean install etc, but figured i'd report more than one person experiencing the problem. the only plugin i am running is the viralsound plugin.

Not the same issue as evilvix's, because his crash is always in in_mp3.dll, whereas yours is in ntdll.dll, which suggests a 3rd-party/non-default plugin to blame (gen_viralsound or ml_transcode)

So far nothing seems to have worked.
I'm not sure how to go about getting any error logs. But I found this tibdit, though it doesn't seem to say much.

Desperate times call for desperate mesures!!!

Before going to a concert tonight (leaving soon!) we just HAD to listen to some music. I installed winamp 2.79 on top of 5.24. And it seems to work. I'm finding this somewhat suspicious, but, enjoying it for the time being.

I am finding this version too slow for my tastes however.

i uninstalled the msn music plugin and it works fine now

Are you sure you have msvcr71.dll & nscrt.dll in your winamp folder?
