we were all n00bs once, keep at it, the easiest way to see how things work is open one up and rip it apart,
you could also get the skinners atlas template,a valuble tool for n00bs such as yourself and maybe do a search on this forum on how to skin winamp classic,
all the answers are here, allthough i cant provide links cause that would mean effort on my part but the answers are there

you can also try GOOGLE!!

later

LOL :P it seems that i'm the same n00b but a bit more "pro"...i never learned to use photoshop :P and after about, mmm let me think, 3 years i'm still making my skins with ms paint :P that's to be n00b :P
wanna get some help...let's see...
the basic things to use are(in my opinion)
MS Paint, photoshop, GIMP (that's a free one and pretty good, i use it)or any other image program that alows BMP files...
then, there are some programes
here that are pretty useful...
  • they will make your work easyer...
  • one of them is the button extractor, this works just for the main window. You draw your main window(the MAIN.BMP file of your skin) and this program, using the bmp file, generates the "base" bmp for the buttons, titlebar, volume, balance, and all the other buttons.
  • another program helps you to change the visualisation colors generating the numbers (EX:99,50,99) of the viscolor.TXT file...it also helps you to generate the number you can use in the pledit.TXT file. This file changes the Playlist and video window font's color and background
  • finaly, the last tool i personally use is the exellent region TXT generator. what is the Region.txt file? well...it's a file that can make some parts of your skin transparent...transparencies only work for the main and EQ windows (and it's windowshade modes)...it's easy to use too and it saves you a lot of work.you have to open the file that you wanna add trasparencies (EX: main.bmp, eqmain.bmp or a little preview of the windowshade modes) with an image editor and then paint the areas that you want to be invisible of the same color. Once done that you open the file with the Region TXT generator program, configurate everything (make sure to choose the right window option), click on the colour and then press the "generate" button...save the file and reload the skin

You can find the Skinners Atlas at the same page...just search for it... there is only one skinners atlas...and it's pretty new, but there have been some little changes...i don't remember which ones...nothing of great importence...
anyway, read a lot :P
ther are also lot's of tricks...I learned a lot checking skins and "opening" them to investigate...those tips were writen on a website...but it seem to have dissapeared...anyway if you are making a skin and wanna share it, we all do it at the forums...so we can give you some tips during the "creative" process...and also some "constructive" critics :P
sorry for my awfull english...hope you understand everything...i think i talk like tarzan :P jajaja
see ya
