Dark spots on new LCD
I got a new 15" sony LCD in a trade.. and there are 2-4 dark spots on it. Far too big to be dead pixels, however they still display colors, just with a little darkness.
Are these normal? If not, what could they be caused by? BTW, the 15" LCD has the sam viewing area as my 17" CRT ![]() They aren't a big deal but I'd like to know if I could make them go away. Not noticable when watching most movies/tv shows. Sony SDM-HS53 30ms response time and spacing of like .29 makes it a lowend monitor, not something I'd think sony would put out SonyStyle.ca manages to charge $350 for it, but it was on par with my end of the trade so no complaints. Still looks fantastic playing battlefield two (on the lowest display settings haha.. i needed an lcd for when i build my gaming system) http://www.itmc.sony-europe.com/pdb/..._SCREEN_A5.jpg yeah, i'm back. |

The dark spots, are they similar to when you press on the panel? (careful)
They're certainly not normal, I'd guess it's either damaged or wasn't assembled properly. |

I counted... three of them.
When I press on the screen, yes the distortion around my finger matches the weird spots. Weird thing is that if I get up close to it (few inches), I can't tell any lighting difference with the pixels compared to the others around it. I thought it was my eyes playing a trick on me (20/80 vision lol), but my brother sees it too. yeah, i'm back. |

sounds like the plastic piece in front of the display is warped and pressing into the panel.
uneven backlighting from the cold cathode is normal in low end displays. |

Any chance you could take a photo of the problem? If not, where are the dark spots located? Are they central or around the edges?
It's probably not worth paying to fix a 15" monitor, but it might just be something simple. If it is warping as rocker suggested, then backing off some screws may relieve the pressure, returning it back to normal. |

One spot is located almost dead centered, about halfway between the middle and bottom of the monitor.
The other is a little higher on the left (but small), and the other is up near the top (also small). None by the edges. I suppose I'll just open her up and see if something's pushing onto those spots.. it was shipped well, so may just be the fact it's a lowend monitor
yeah, i'm back. |

Glass on a powerbook? You probably meant plastic.
Looks like the screen had stress/pressure on those areas at one point in time. If you just got it new, you can probably back up your data and trade it for another without the problem, or they might somehow fix it for free - should be something that the warranty would cover. Don't forget to live before you die.
