Very simple problem: 2 videos at once?

Hi there,
My problem is brief and I'm sure it's just something in Winamp I need to turn off/on to fix.

After I reformatted my computer with Windows XP Professional SP2, I cannot play a game and have a video running in the background. I always get the blue screen. Let me give you an example. I'm playing World of Warcraft or Frozen Throne, minimize out and open a video to listen to a few songs from there. I minimize that, go back into the game, and 3 seconds later, blue screen. This happens every time. It also happens with Windows Media Player.

System specs:
Windows XP Professional SP2
AMD 3500+
X800 XT 256mb video card
512x2 OCZ dual channel RAM
MSI MS-6702E
VIA Chipset K8T800 Pro

If it is happening to either player, that would suggest it is a system problem rather than a Winamp specific issue. A stop message (AKA blue screen) with Windows XP, usually relates a driver or hardware issue.

Try updating the video/display and sound drivers. Sorry, as it is system problem there is not much help that we can give you.

BTW Have you ever heard that old cliché about the guy who visits his doctor complaining about a pain in his arm?...
This guy says to his doctor, “Doc, every time I do this my arm hurts.

And, the doctor says, “Well, don't do that.
I am not trying to be flippant in any way, however the point being. -- If running a game and a video at the same time causes your computer to crash (hurt), don't do that.

Anyways, good luck and happy Winamping.

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

Thanks for the reply, have you heard the old saying,

"Are you listening - get your head out of the clouds"?

If I see a bluescreen, obviously I would not do it again :\ I'm just looking for a way to fix this problem. I appreciate the help explaining it might be a driver issue, but your common sense should tell you that I probably am NOT doing it over and over.

Thanks again.

You're welcome.

I understood you were looking for a fix and I did not think you were doing that over & over again. My apologies if I insulted you in any way.

That last suggestion was meant as a "If you can’t find fix for it" type of thing.

Oh come one now. Let’s take it easy on Pythos. Pythos already knows not to do that again.

Why not? A blue screen isn't gonna blow up his computer ;-)...

And anyway... that might actually come in useful... if you're playing a really boring game (ummm... just about any strategy game of "tactical" shooter :-D) just run a video in the background on your second or third monitor :-D

It sort-of looked like you were lightly scorning him (or her). No big deal

Well JonnyMac, thanks for the apology.

Now, you want to know why I would play the video files in the background? Well, there is music on those files that I do not know the name of...yes I know it's stupid, but I don't have the names of the songs...so only way I can do listen to them is to run them while I play :P

Thanks again.

Maybe the following workaround (I wish I thought of this before)...
Winamp > Ctrl+P > General Preferences > Video > uncheck 'Display the video window when video playback begins'
Maybe not exactly what you would like. If that setting is unchecked/disabling and you want to view a video for regular playback, you can manually toggle the video window (Alt+V or main/right-click menu > Video). Otherwise, re-enable the setting to display the vid window automatically.

Hey JonnyMac,
Thanks for your help again I really appreciate this.

That fix you gave me partially worked. I started WoW, and minimized out of the game, opened WinAmp after applying the settings you told me (Disable video playback). Well, it worked. My computer did not crash.

After 10 minutes, I noticed nothing wrong was happening. Satisfied, I closed the game. However, when I exited WinAmp - right when I clicked on the 'X' in the upper right corner - the blue screen came again

I think we are getting some headway though.

Again, I really appreciate your help.

You might try going into the Video Preferences in Winamp and uncheck the option to allow Hardware Overlay.

You could also load up some audio/wav recording program, set your Sound Card's recording option to "wave" or "what you hear" or "stereo mix" or some such thing.. play the video in Winamp and record a WAV file version of it. Then, convert the WAV file to whatever if you wanted.

Or.. load the video file into a program that can extract the audio out of the video.

Just curious, are there any filenames in this bluescreen that you are getting?

Have you tried updating the drivers?

Please provide a Hijack This log. Download links for HjT and instructions for posting log can be found here.

As this is more of a system issue (i.e. driver or hardware), there is no guarantee that we can help you after providing a HjT log. Also, no guarantee that will provide helpful insight. However, maybe someone here can find something.

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

Hmmm... Are you running the latest catalysts and other drivers? Virus & Spyware-free? Really sounds like a driver problem, so make sure those're all in working order...

Hey guys, thanks again for the prompt responses,

Now, I'm fairly certain this is a driver issue as well. I do not have Catalyst 6.6 yet because in the release notes, under "Known Problems for Catalyst 6.6" they have many issues that affect me, so I did not download it. However, they plan to release a new Catalyst within 2-3 days, hopefully those will be better.

I am also running the latest virus/spyware scanners...AVG, Spybot, and Ad-aware.

In a few minutes I will try the Hardware Overlay option in Winamp.

I understand there is no guarentee, and if it were up to me, I would flush my video card down with my shit because I hate it that much. However, it's expensive to get another one, so might as well keep what I have...

Thanks again guys.

Blah, I could not find any "red flags" in the HjT log.
