x64 native Winamp?

Whether there is an opportunity to realize x64-bit native version of WinAmp?

short version is:

while it can work, all plug-ins need to be x64 compatable and since none are, work will have to be done to make this happen.

it may come at a later date, but remember work has been started to support this in the future.

Hello again!

Whether there will be in the future a native x64-86 WinAmp? Whether work in this direction is conducted?

Thanks.

not much

I think its more effort than its worth. you don't gain anything by having an x64 release apart from issues.

the main issue is even if things were fully ported over to run under 64-bit natively, you kill off straight away all of the plugins which people use to make winamp what it is for them - and a massive proportion would never/cannot be updated so it makes it pretty pointless. is along the same lines as linux builds of winamp.

there really is little benefit i can see for a native version over the downsides of killing off the extensability of the player as is what people know it for being

Using the "search" feature...

I understand the initial set backs of a native x64 Winamp but please consider the following:

One day, x64 will be the standard much like how x86 is right now.

If people have both systems today (x86/x64) why not make use of both?

And my biggest argument...

If you never make an x64 Winamp, no one can ever make x64 plugins.
I know that this is one of the biggest issues regarding a native x64 winamp but if you release an x64 winamp people can then start to make x64 plugins.

Remember...

So keep this in mind.

True, but I've yet to see anyone bring forth an argument for creating a 64bit Winamp plugin over a 32bit one either.

A friend of mine uses iTunes on his 64-bit production box (Vista Ultimate x64) and found that he could not burn CDs with it because the disc burning driver it uses was 32-bit.

Does 32-bit Winamp have the same problem under 64-bit Vista? If it does, that'd be a big reason to consider supporting 64-bit.

Maybe Vista x64 doesn't like it but I've burned CDs with Winamp under XP x64 without problems.

i havn't checked in a while but vista x64 burns cd's, not very well... but they do burn. (but the problem is the library's for cd burning are not made by nullsoft, they are licensed from sonic, so the bugs lie with them. We can only complain about it.)

I use burrrn to burn cd's(for its native cue, gapless and good format support) and yes i'm using vista x64 ultimate.

Ive been using winamp for a long long time... and when I did switch over to x64, winamp wasn't one of the problem children running in that environment... however, since the latest version, I have endless problems. I can't verify I wouldn't have problems in 32 cause I'm not reinstalling it at the moment, but there are so many theme issues, crashes, and general anomalies that rather then worry about it, I'm soured on winamp.

Could be it has nothing to do with winamp or x64, but other things work fine, so im not inclined to research.

I know x64 is always an audience v. work issue, but when your not sure its not just a built in conflict your dealing with it makes it hard to want to tweak the program to work right.

Just my opinion. thanks.

Splaetos: do a clean reinstall, the latest version is the least buggy winamp ever. its probably a third party plugin causing your issues(and these problems are on both architectures)
