How to withdraw the last caracters of a variable

Hello,

i'm still working on my XML files. Here is my issue :
I would like to withdraw the 4 last caracters of a name.
I've got a variable $R1 equal to "try1.xml" which is the name of my XML file but i would like to use the name "try1" without the 4 last caracters ".xml" so as to have a new variable called $R2 (for example) equal to "try1"
Does anybody can help me ...

Thanks

Bertrand
