First google result for RAM + check:
http://www.memtest86.com/
seems down to the core but may be a bit difficult

an easier result:
http://hcidesign.com/memtest/
this one is simpler I think but less accurate

memtest86 is not complicated at all.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have a memory question...

My tower computer has DDR 400 PC3200 memory running in dual channel. My laptop computer has DDR2 533 PC4200 running in dual channel. Why does my tower have almost twice the memory bandwidth as my laptop?

Good question.

It's probably a combination of a less efficient memory controller, lower effective FSB and the inherent higher latencies of DDR2.

There's plenty of articles covering the advantages/disadvantages of DDR1 vs DDR2:

It could also just be that the benchmark you're using favors one system over the other.

Ah. That would explain it. I'd completely forgotten that AMD's newer processors have the memory controllers on-die. The Mobile Sempron 3200+ in my laptop has an effective bus speed of 1600Mhz while the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ in my tower has an effective bus speed of 2000Mhz. And if I'm not mistaken, the latencies of the DDR2 in my laptop have equivalent DDR ratings that are higher than the memory in my tower as well. I can only assume that those two things could cause the massive throughput difference.

Thanks for the info.
