MKV subtitles won't play
Yo! Hi all
Now I've looked through other posts, but I can' figure it out. I just can't get subtitles to play in Winamp with MKV video. I've added MKV to .dll to get the video and audio working, but I can't get the subtitles working, I use CCCP and Winamp 5.24. Any help is appreciated PS. Don't recommend another player, I hate using VLC, if I wanted to use Windows Media Player, I would. |

winamp doesn't really support any subtitles.
unless directvobsub can automatically detect and decode them.(I think its is part of the CCCP pack) |

Get MKVtoolnik You can extract the sub you want to use from the mkv file.
After it, rename the sub with the same name of the mkv, and vobsub will loading in winamp. |

I don't want to. I know I can do that, I just don't want to. I'm very familiar with MKVtoolnix, I know how to, but like I said, I just don't want to. Surely someone knows how to do it without all the messy crap? |

Winamp has horrible video support. Don't bother trying to use it for videos.
Use VLC Or if you like playing with directshow filters, then use any decent directshow based player of your choice. Getting subs to work in winamp is a pain (I've done it once or twice). It is not worth the effort. |

If you don't want to extract the sub, I really don't if you can do anything with winamp. I don't think there's any options for subtitles in it.

Try installing the Haali Media Splitter.
There should be an icon in the system tray that popups up that allows you to turn Subtitles on or off. Make sure Overlaye mode is enabled in Winamp: Preferences > Video (Allow Hardware Overlay, I think) | Brought to you by ^V ^C | The one... the original... no seriously! |

Kannan's video plugin (or however it's spelled) might be able to do it, but I think it bypasses winamp's output system. I think that's how I managed to get subtitles working with winamp before. I don't know if in_mplayer understands subtitles, might be worth a try though.
Good luck

In a nutshell.
Basically, from a starting point of having the CCCP Codec pack installed you have to make two adjustments.
1. Turn on autoloading VSFilter in Haali's Media Splitter settings. Start> All programs> Combined Community Codec Pack> Media Splitter Settings> Options Tab> Compatibility> Autoload VSFilter 2. Install VSFilter V2.34. VSFilter 2.37,2.36 and 2.35 don't work with winamp. Check the version of VSFilter you are using with the CCCP codec pack. Its probably version 2.37. Start> All programs> Combined Community Codec Pack> VSFilter Config> About Tab. The latest version of VSFilter that works with winamp (loads embedded subtitles in MP4,3GP,MKV and OGM with Haali Splitter) is VSFilter 2.34. Download it from sourceforge here. Unzip the file "VSFilter.dll" and use it to replace the existing VSFilter.dll file located at C:\Program Files\Combined Community Codec Pack\Filters\ Check the version of VSFilter again and it should read DirectVobSub 2.34 That's it. The subtitles should work automatically when you play a .MKV or .OGM file in WinAmp. Happy viewing. Fry |

** QUICK UPDATE **
don't mean to bring up old news but...there's a newer version of VSFilter available for download and it works with winamp.
VSFilter 2.38 came out this year and it works with winamp. simply download it and use the same instructions that were provided by ghn01. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DirectVobSub.htm free-codecs.com/download/DirectVobSub.htm |
