ID3 Tags Auto-Updating

I have a problem with a small amount of my library automatically updating the ID3 tags by inserting a genre and a composer and sometimes an empty comment. With the recent 5.3 update it is now putting things into the Album Artist field as well. I use the v2 tags for all my songs but usually when the tag is updated a copy is made in the v1 area with as much info as will fit. I like all my tags and songs to follow certain conventions and this is really getting my goat. I have pored over all the options in the Winamp preferences and can't find anything that would stop this. I only use Winamp to listen to my music so I don't think another player is interfering here. Does anybody have any idea?

Winamp doesn't have any auto-update feature with ID3 tags.

Sound a lit like what Windows Media Player liks to do in the background:

Yeah, I looked into that but WMP isn't even pointed at my audio tracks. Neither is iTunes and they are the only other media players that I have and I've never used them to listen my songs. Their libraries are empty and any "search for music" options are turned off. I know Winamp doesn't have any feature that should be doing this and I don't have any extra plugins at all outside of what installs alongside Winamp. I'm a simple man.

So you made sure that "retrieve additional info from the internet" is unchecked in WMP > Options > Library tab, and "update music files by retrieving media info from the internet" is unchecked in the Privacy tab?

Both those options are enabled by default under WMP 9/10/11
and it'll update files whenever they are accessed by any program, regardless of them not being in WMP's library or even if WMP isn't running. Basically, WMP is integrated into the Windows shell, so some of its libraries (dll) are always kinda running in the background anyway.

But yeah, as Sawg said, there's no native feature of Winamp that can do anything like this. I don't even know of any 3rd-party plugins either, but have you installed any maybe?

Yeah, I checked those WMP options a while ago when this started and I haven't even downloaded any skins for Winamp so that's a no on the 3rd party plug-ins. I am truly at a loss.

Checked? You mean unchecked, yes?

Skins aren't plugins. Maybe post my_plugin_list.txt and HijackThis logs (see link).

afaik, iTunes also has a similar feature, but Winamp definitely does not.

Yeah, "checked" as in "verified they were unchecked." Sorry about that. I know skins aren't plugins. I was just trying to illustrate the fact that I have done nothing to modify Winamp past what you get when you download it from this site. I've also checked all the options in iTunes too but couldn't find anything.

Hi,

maybe a bit to late, but I have the same problem that winamp putting the artist name into the album artist column in the id3tag and I don't know why.

I'm editing the id3tags via an editor normally before updating my library and I have never used the "album artist" column before.

So how can I prevent from adding this info to the id3tag?

This has been happening to me, as well. When I use the "Edit selected items..." option, it will insert the artist into the album artist field even if the edit checkbox is unchecked. I have to check it and leave it blank to edit other fields. The composer field also gets filled in sometimes, but it seems to be more random. This has been annoying me since the updated version - especially since I have been sorting through a lot of music. It seems like just a glitch in the new ID3 tag editor, but I don't know. Any help would be appreciated!!

I'm editing the id3tags via an editor normally before updating my library and I have never used the "album artist" column before. So how can I prevent from adding this info to the id3tag?

When I use the "Edit selected items..." option, it will insert the artist into the album artist field even if the edit checkbox is unchecked. I have to check it and leave it blank to edit other fields. The composer field also gets filled in sometimes, but it seems to be more random. This has been annoying me since the updated version - especially since I have been sorting through a lot of music. It seems like just a glitch in the new ID3 tag editor, but I don't know. Any help would be appreciated!!
