video won't play all formats

I always use Winamp to play my videos but recently it won't recognize mpg. files. It plays wmv. files OK. I have it set as the default player for all the files but all I get on the video screen is the Nullsoft video logo. I have done uninstall and reinstalled the latest files, even the beta version and have followed DJ Egg instructions in another thread, but all I get is the sound and no picture with the mpg files. I can get the video to play on windows media player, but I prefer Winamp

Hi. Which instructions of mine did you follow exactly?

Please provide some additional information
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#specs

See the video section there (paragraph 6)
We need to see a dxdiag log to show us relevant system specs and a list of all DirectShow decoders installed, a GSpot log for one of the mpg videos which won't play, and a my_plugin_list.txt file to see a list of all plugins installed.

ml_win_media.ini relates to the Online Media section of the Media Library, only. The referred fix just made the "Winamp Videos" view appear again under Online Media, ie. it's got nothing to do with playback of local (or streamed) video files.

Please upgrade to the latest Winamp 5.13
Alas, 5.09 is no longer supported.

If the problem persists, then right click one of the mpg files in the winamp playlist, whilst it's (meant to be) playing, select "View File Info", and tell us what it says the "currently used filters" are.

I've got a feeling the problem might be occuring because you've got 8 or more different mpeg video/audio ds decoders (microsoft, ati, roxio, nero, pixela, ffdshow, pinnacle, mainconcept/sonic) installed, and this might be confusing Winamp. It's possibly one of the pixela or mainconcept mpeg splitters causing the problem... we shall see.

Hi again

I have put 5.13 back on. I only went back to the previous version because it used to work OK in that.
Still no video, so currently used filters are:-

MainConcept MPEG Splitter
MPEG Audio Decoder
Sonic Cinemaster DS Video Decoder
Video Renderer

Hmm, let's see if we can disable this dodgy MainConcept MPEG Splitter thing...

First, you need to tell me the location of that file.

I tried searching for it on google, and it looks like it could be located here:

C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MCMPEG\mcspmpeg.ax

According to the google results, it also looks like plenty of other people are having problems with mcspmpeg.ax, and not just winamp-related.

Most people recommend just disabling that file, by eg. renaming it to mcspmpeg.ax.off, though this might prevent your Sony/Sonic Cinemaster from working (ie. it might not be able to play any mpeg's if you disable that file).

I'd suggest just unregistering it, so that Cinemaster will still use it, but no other players will.

Start > Run

Type:

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\File
Formats\MCMPEG\mcspmpeg.ax"

(Note, replace it with the correct path to mcspmpeg.ax, if different)
(Also note the single space before and after /u)

Hit Enter/Open

Let me know how it goes. If there's still problems, we might need to do the same with "Sonic Cinemaster DS Video Decoder" (CinemasterVideo.DLL), and maybe also re-register the default Microsoft MPEG Splitter, eg.

regsvr32 /u "x:\path\to\CinemasterVideo.DLL"

regsvr32 quartz.dll

and/or you could try configuring ffdshow to handle mpeg-1 videos via:
start > programs > ffdshow > video decoder config

but we'll only go into this if you've still got problems after disabling the MainConcept MPEG Splitter.

Hi and thanks

Nothing happened with the first file (mcspmpeg.ax)apart from saying it had succeeded, but as soon as I tried the second (Cinemaster Video) I have got my video back.
Should I just leave things as they are now or should I try and re-register mcspmpeg.ax again? (I don't know the exact code)

Thanks again

No, you don't want to re-register the MainConcept Splitter (mcspmpeg.ax), because it's related to the other dodgy one (Cinemaster Video).
If everything's working ok now, then just leave it alone.

As a matter of interest, what filters does Winamp now say it's using?

I still can't get Winamp to play ANY video

I'm really not very computer savvy, but I would really like this to work. I followed the instructions on this thread and the other one Margaret referred to (clean install etc.) but it still won't work. Please help.

We also need to see a MediaInfo log for one of the problem video files
(assuming all your problem videos are the same file extension and format).

At a guess, you need to install a DirectShow Filter to handle DivX/XviD, and possibly other content. In which case you should install ffdshow (installing with all the default options should suffice).

But if the video files are some other format, then we will definitely need the rest of the info asked for via that link above.
