DirectSound
Hi, firstly it might be helpful if i explain what i am trying to do.
I am trying to play my mp3's and divx/avi files through winamp, via my av reciever. My connection is as follows Creative xtreme music sound card with a creative audio 7.1 cable going to my denon 2807 reciever which is then linked to a set of kef 3005 speakers and sub. Now i have all of my speakers working fine they are all outputing sound, the problem is my sub is not working in winamp correctly. I believe i have narrowed it down to direct sound setting. In other applications i can set mp3's to play using direct sound and my sub works fine, however in winamp. If i set the input plugin direct show decoder to play mp3 files my sub still does not work, also if i play a divx or avi file my sub does not work either. So how can i get 5.1 surround sound with my sub on using winamp over this connection? I really would appreciate some help on this as i have been trying various things for about 4 hours now

tried playing a 5.1 ac3 file?
mp3's are designed to run in 2.0 mode or 1.0 mode. no more and no less. any attempt to change that will result in poorer quality audio. (and with the middle speaker it might as well be mono) if you were serious about audio quality like it looks like you are, mp3 is not the format you want to use. have you tried turning on surround sound in playback settings. |

well, if i set 3/2+sw in the ac3 filter, i get 5.1 surround sound using windvd 7 for movies/divx and mp3 files, it also works in windows media player classic, and in ashampoo media player+, however in winamp, windows media player 10 and music match jukebox i only get 5.0 the sub does not work. Since winamp is the only player i actually use, i really would love to find a solution, the quality isnt an issue at the moment i just want to get the things working for my mp3/divx collection, and i can focus on maybe using a loseless format for my audio later.
There has to be some setting in winamp to fix this ? |

done a bit more investigating, seems windows media player when playing an avi file is using the ac3 filter and winamp is not, so my sub is working in wmp for avi files ( still not with mp3, and winamp still wont work with mp3 or avi with my sub. It must be the way winamp is handling the codecs. Really could use some help here
