CD to iPod Shuffle?

First, I am using Winamp 5.32 and Winamp recognizes my iPod Shuffle.

Is it possible to transfer files directly from CD to an iPod Shuffle without ripping them to the hard disk first?

When I try, I get the message 'Some of these tracks were of an incompatible format and will not be transferred'.

Here's the method I was trying:

- Insert CD
- Add songs from teh CD to my playlist
- Select the songs I want to transfer
- Right-click
- Select iPod Shuffle under 'Send To:'
