Some skipping-like a scratched CD!

Lately I have been having the problem of skipping with the new version of Winamp, which although I want to keep have had to delete. I now am using the older version of Winamp (2.5e) and that is much better. I just wanted to know what the problem with the new version so that I can rectify it.

Now when you say skipping, do you mean it skips from part of a song to another, or does it play for a few seconds, pauses, then continues ?

If it's the latter, try increasing the buffer size.
Options > Preferences > Output > Nullsoft waveout > configure. Increase Buffer length to 6000. If problem continues to persist, increase buffer length accordingly ( maz 10,000 ).

Btw, I assume it skips when you're playing MP3's ?
