I woke up at 2 A.M. and the temperature was -1 F. I'm getting use to it already. After a week I'm sure I'll be sick of it. At least I can finally ski!

More shots of lake; I have several more. Most of it is frozen enough to jump on and be safe, but somehow the malards and swans keep a thawed spot.

This morning was one of the coldest mornings I can remember in a long time...

That's 5°F or -15°C. Currently it is a balmy 16°F or -9°C

School was closed because of the cold. Our digital thermometers only go to -21F before it reads 0Fl (offline) and both today and yesterday they wer offline. Wind chills were around -35F for us. My thumbs went numb last night, I had to park my car in the pole shed, plug it in, lock the pole shed and walk 25-50 feet up to my house. Then had to unlock it, and get in. The process took 5-8mins and my thumbs were numb and fingers where almost numb. It's cold out there.

Unbelievably, we're not supposed to drop below zero for the next week and nearly all of our snow is melting. Global warming is costing us our reign as deep freeze of the country.

We made it below zero last night, but it's 9 now. Wind chill is not too bad, drops the temp maybe 10 degrees, but really, this is nothing to be scared of, growing up this happened for a couple weeks every year.

My district cancelled today and tomorrow, but I really don't see why - if the kids bundle up they should be fine getting to school, and the roads are all clean.

I was out in the cold splitting wood for about 2 hours and didn't get uncomfortable - although I will admit, I had my ears and hands covered. Wood splits better in the cold anyway - in the summer when it splits you have to pry a bunch of splintery shit apart, and in the winter, it just breaks evenly in half, plus it doesn't overheat you to do it in the winter.

Supposedly it was -25 something in Minneapolis this morning. Here in chicago the wind is the bitchiest part... those 40 mph gusts of face raping cold really suck.

Put a little digital thermometer in my vehicle last night and let the sensor dangle out the window. Checked it at about 5:20am EST and it was at -1°F (-18.3°C). Been a long while since I last remember it being that cold.

It's not that ted, It's the parents that don't care that send their kids out in the cold not bundled up. Then they get frostbite.

I think you're right - the middle school girls are the worst - they'd rather lose a limb or two before wearing something that didn't expose a ton of skin or looked out of fashion. The parents don't seem to push kids to wear their gloves or hats.

Really, with a common heavy coat, gloves and either an insulated hood or hat, it's not too uncomfortable to be out there. Maybe for a kid I'd want longjohns or snow pants or even sweats underneath to be sure they're warm. I just wish that parents would make sure their kids were well bundled up, because they're outside more when school's out than when school is in session, and I see them out there with a lot less than what they need.

Aside of all that,

I was out there again running the dogs on the lake today, and the dogs didn't seem to care, and they're not wearing anything other than short hair and a collar - they just chased each other all over the place and knocked each other down (and almost took me out a couple times too).

The only thing I worry about with dogs is the hair between the paw pads. Snow tends to turn to ice cubes and dangle from that hair and can cause the skin to split and injure the foot, so if you have a dog outside, be sure to trim/shave back all that foot hair ahead of time.

Don't forget to live before you die.

The problem reported around here is the school buses are using a new low-sulfur diesel fuel that they're required to use under federal environmental standards that went into effect last fall. The fuel tends to congeal at low temperatures, clogging the filters which in turn prevents the fuel from getting to the engine.

Not all the buses are stored in garages or in some cases, power was lost to the garages so there was no heat in them.

Luckily the wind is weak here, even on the lakes (where there's nothing to slow it down). The temp. even got into double digits above zero! The elementary schools are still having indoor recess, and we only lost Monday and Tuesday for bad-weather days.

This week has been cold for me. -30 C without windchill (probably -40 with) just a few days ago. right now its -17 C. whats messed up about my weather is that next week it will be going up to +5 C. What happened to the rest of winter? I thought I disliked winter untill I now discovered that its done (probably for a few days, then back on again, though).

My summmer is about 45 C max. I liked the summer I had a few years ago, which was about 30 C max.

I wish it was between 18 and 30 C and sunny most of the time, with rain once or twice a week +/-. Completely comfortable to me!

Winter's not so bad - I suffer inhalent allergies in all other seasons, and few things refresh me more than going outside in maybe just below freezing temperatures, and inhaling a breath of clean, cold, crisp air.

Something about a blanket of snow seems to erase the past year so that one can start new with a blank white canvas every year.

The low temps, wind chills and increased difficulty in managing the environment seem to be a welcomed challenge to me, making me proud that I'm able to go on with everyday life, unscathed by my confrontation with it.

There's this huge part of me that loves winter, probably bigger than the part that likes any other season.

Are there any others in this forum that honestly like winter?

I live in Wisconsin. I used to like winter. Two years ago I worked mostly in the outdoors in the cold. Then i got laid off and am now working indoors. Now i hate winter, which pisses me off because i used to like winter when i was working outdoors. I didn't think this weather was cold at all. Now I'll go in the garage and shiver my ass off and thats just in the garage.

Exactly. I drive a school bus, and for the last week we've had to leave them running overnight because 60% of them wouldn't start on Monday, despite being plugged in (so the buses, by Friday night, had been running for roughly 120 hours--the fuel expense alone, man!). The utter chaos we had on Monday trying to get our routes covered kind of made the terminal manager say "fuck the EPA, we can't afford to do this every morning."

Incidentally, having to inspect the bus in -15 weather every morning, or whatever it was--I know at least one day was -15--is not fun.

I must be getting all of your hours. Six or seven days, always. My friends in construction are getting about the same as you. When warm weather arrives and they start putting in 12 hour days, I'll rarely see them.

People are having fun driving around and ice fishing on the lakes.

I took a drive to see some family - I don't think I should have been out there.

Hundreds of schools were closed between Missouri and New York, and I drove 14 hours from the middle of Missouri to Akron, OH. I was cruising at a blazing speed of 41 miles per hour.

Here in Oregon, it's been a really mild winter, except for a ice storm about a month ago.

It hasn't froze in a month. I guess New York got our winter. It's been 55 during the day mostly. I haven't taken my heavy coat out this year at all.

This is finally a winter that reminds me of those I had as a kid - temperatures occasionally below zero (Fahrenheit), between 1 and 3 feet of snow accumulated, lakes you can drive on, and a few snow days to enjoy it all.
