Windows vista vrs Winamp ?

I've used winamp in four versions on at least six computers, never a problem. Just purchased a new Dell with windows vista os. I have tried all four versions of winamp and always get the same message when I try to play music from my mp3 files, it goes like this. "DirectSound output v 2.46 (d) error" at the top of window, below it says " (big red x) Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or seelect another divice in configuration. Error code: 88780078" Can anyone tell me what to do, I miss my winamp.

this means your soundcard is not set up correctly

try downloading updated soundcard drivers.

Well, I'm relieved to know that winamp is not the problem here. Tried other systems and they do not work either. Device manager says it is all working correctly. Dang I don't like problems like this.

ok, I heard a nasty little rumor that MS removed DirectSound support from Vista. Hence the DirectSound Output isn't working and causing the errors you are experiencing. Change Output Plug-In to wave out and you can play in winamp on vista. Still other annoying issues with winamp on vista such as hanging for no reason on loading songs etc. Hope this helps.

ok so I followed up on the 'rumor' and they didn't remove directsound output, but they significantly changed it and lots of programs are having problems with it. here's an article that explains a bit of what they did: http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/743/743502p1.html (ve3d.ign.com/articles/743/743502p1.html) either way, the wave out plugin for winamp gets winamp sound to work on vista. of course the old problem of the sound dragging when you scroll is back

Sounds like he went to (General) Preferences [Ctrl + P]> Plug-ins > Output and selected Nullsoft waveOut Output and selected another song to play...

what soundcard do you have (EXACT model number and make)

are you using vista 32bit or 64bit?

directsound output plugin works fine with vista (although i don't think hardware acceleration works) i'm using it right now.

wavout is designed more for windows 9x/ME/NT4 platforms.
