I want to appreciate Jazz
Typically most of the music I enjoy is either rock or electronica (but, that can be anything from Metallica to Queen to Sigur Ros to Xploding Plastix to DJ Tiesto).
I've only recently begun to enjoy some jazz (Benny Goodman, Peggy Lee, a few others). I really don't know anything ABOUT jazz. I only randomly come across jazz tunes that I like. So far, some of my favorite Jazz apparently belongs to a style called 'Third Stream',: Moondog's self-titled album. I particularily love 'Symphonique #6'. That track has three things I love: complexity, melody, and, most importantly, it slowly builds on itself to become more full-bodied and ends with a terrifically 'powerful' finish. That last part seems pretty rare in the jazz I've heard. This is probably a very difficult question, but can any Jazz lovers out there recommend some artists & tracks that I might enjoy based on my appreciation for Symphonique #6? (and, to some degree, Third Stream in general) If you can, thanks! I'd really like to broaden my musical horizons, though I'm not sure I'll ever develop a taste for hip-hop, rap, or country. |

Well, I play in a jazz band, but we don't play stuff exactly like that.
My favorite artist is without a doubt Bird. Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway. |

There a dozen artists with that name or nickname. Please, which one? Like, what are a few of Bird's albums?

I highly reccomend a good Glenn Miller album if you enjoy the Big Band sound. I really like the "Past Perfect" label for remastered vintage jazz.
http://www.pastperfect.com/ The thing with jazz is that it is, IMHO, the most "all encompassing" genre of music. Big Band and Tenors from the the 20's - 40's, swing, classic singers like Armstrong and Fitzgerald, the Blues, Latin Jazz, "World Music", and even the likes of Kenny G or John Tesh ( ), It spans a lot of different tastes. KKJZ Long Beach is a great local station in Southern California that has a live internet stream. It's member supported so it's commercial free. You might also listen to the archived streams, esp. the "88 Greats" which is a who's who of classic jazz. http://www.jazzandblues.org/listen/ (They also run the stream in MP3 PRO for winamp) http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=99390

Thanks for the tips, guys!
Are any of you aware of any specific artists or tracks that have the steady buildup and powerful finish of Symphonique #6 by Moondog? (I'll definitely look into ALL your other suggestions, still). |

I'm sorry. I mean Charlie Parker. He's a sax player who is absolutely incredible. If you like any type of fast jazz saxophone, I would definitely reccomend him. If you don't already like jazz sax, you might want to download a song or two and see what you think. You may learn to love it.

Try either:
St. Germain -or- RJD2 -or- DJ Cam ....they are kinda like acid jazz/trip-hop. Its really good, chillax lounge music. And don't forget the classics: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonoius Monk, Bill Evans, etc. |

You've made a good choice.
Jazz is good music. My favorite Acid Jazz group - Gota (they do some great improvisation). Another good artist is Sammy Nestico. Some of my favorite jazz songs have been: Van Morrison - Moondance Sammy Nestico - A little blues please Les Taylor - Fudge Said the Judge Dizzie Gillespie - Manteca Rob Vuono jr. - Calling Dr. Chops Jay Bocook - Sun Cat "It's like saying give a man a Les Paul guitar and he becomes Eric Clapton, and of course that's not true, give a man an amplifier and a synthesizer and he doesn't become...whoever; he doesn't become us." - Roger Waters |

I only have The Stix which is pretty damn good. Best bet would be to go on their last.fm page and preview some of their releases...

There are tons of jazz albums available at most public libraries (at least there are here). Try listening to some of those when you get a chance and decide what you like most.
Don't forget to live before you die.

Focus on noticing if you prefer certain sub-generes of jazz ... or even certain intruments ... for example, if you really like the sound of a sax fronting, then check out all the notable sax players (they each are slightly different) #1 Wish - Album Art Config #2 Wish - Add Encoded Tag To The ML I recommend DrO's Plugins and ◊ Screen Lock Detector ◊ Power Hour ◊ ShnAmp ◊ TrayAmp ◊ WinampSwitch ◊ |
