v5.33 doesnt like my external drive

Had run winamp v5.13 (non-pro) for along time til this past weekend, then i upgraded to v5.33 (non-pro), everything worked fine and i really liked the dashboard addition..... then today i got a Western Digital 320GB My Book external drive (hooked up via firewire port), this drive has about 80gb of music files (mp3, wma, itunes, etc) along with some pics etc on it.... the sec i hook this thing up, it seems the media library in v5.33 wants to look at it and then winamp dies. If i launch winamp with the my book already hooked up, well winamp hangs for like 5-10 seconds and then dies. if the my book isnt hooked up, winamp v5.33 works fine. read thru alot of the tech msgs here, tried a complete fresh install of 5.33, nope still the same thing (also tried disabling some of the addons mentioned in other threads as possible problems), went and found a slightly older version 5.24, same problem (complete clean installs of this one too)...went back to a clean install of 5.13 and all is fine with the my book hooked up. any ideas or help on what to do? would like to use v5.33 but you can understand that i dont wanna give up a 320gb drive to tho

my computer is:
HP Pavilion Media Center a1430n Desktop PC (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 3800+, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, LightScribe Double Layer DVD+/-R/RW Drive)

FAQ

How to stop Winamp from managing external usb hard drives
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=268729

Although there's no reference of any crashes in those threads, you can totally disable external/generic usb drive support by removing pmp_usb.dll from the Winamp\Plugins folder.

Note: Portable Media Player (pmp) support wasn't introduced until 5.2x
