winamp crashes XP with intel motherboard

hi,

Can you help me be able to use winamp again?

After reloading winamp (5.34) using a new mobo, it doesn't work & repeatedly produces the windows Blue Screen of Death. Using the same CD/DVD drives and drivers it used to work reaonably well.

I have put a new mother board (and new boot drive, SATA instead of PATA) into a computer, reinstalling the same copy & roughly the same updates of XP pro.

The new mobo is an Intel DG965WH & the on-board audio is active, run by SigmaTel/SonicFocus software. I wonder if the problem may not lie there.

Problem
- if asked to rip standard commercial Audio CDs (without copyright problems) on either of the CD drives, winamp produces the windows Blue Screen of Death. Winamp successfuly contacts Gracenote & adds mp3tags if they are available. It crashes windows on the actual final rip command.

- if audio CD tracks are 2x-clicked in the media library / rip and burn to play off a DVD drive, one may play, but at the latest after the second 2x-click command on a second track in the media library, the BSoD appears.

The problems persist through different CDs.

- if mp3 files from a Hdrive are dragged onto the play list or into media library / audio, (and allowed to complete a Gracenote search) and 2x clicked (or once in the main window, if the play button is clicked) the filenames appear in the main window, but the files don't play. They go from position -00.00 to 00.00 to -00.00 in about 0.5 seconds and do nothing more.

I have been using winamp pro (can provide purchase info if interest exists) since winamp 2 or 3 and have used the program at least once a week, usually far more often in that time. I am reasonably familiar with it, and have updated it as updates were released. On winamp 5.34 I am using full bundle.

To overcome the above problems I removed the copy of winamp I had installed on the new HDrive, using control panel for a clean removal. I then installed, tested, and -- after BSoD failures -- cleanly removed winamp 5.25, then 5.3, then 5.34. I then repeated these clean reinstalls, this second time manually removing from the registry any reference to winamp. Above failures persist.

I also removed and reinstalled both DVD drives (Plextor 708A) & insured that they were using current firmware.

Adobe Audition 1.5 has no problems.

WMP 10 works perfectly: plays audio and video, and rips to mp3, cbr 128, 44,100 Hz.

Only winamp can't deal with the system.

As a matter of comparison, I have another computer with the same periferal hardware, but an older gigabyte mobo. The newer "intel mobo" computer used also to have a gigabyte mobo. winamp runs fine on the gigabyte mobo (using a sound blaster card) and used to run fine when the current "intel mobo" computer had it's old gigabyte mobo, using the gigabyte's on-board audio.

First the plugins, then sys info:

Hi

Hmm, what are the details of the BSoD error message?
(Stop message & error code)

If this was a proper clean install of Winamp 5.34 Pro, then have you rebooted since installing it?

A reboot is required on first-time installs, to make sure that the Sonic Burning/Ripping Engine is properly registered.

Does the problem persist if you uncheck "Use Sonic" in both:
1) Winamp > Prefs > Media Library > CD Ripping > Ripping tab
2) Winamp > Prefs > Plugins > Input > in_cdda > config?

Re: mp3 playback
Go to; Winamp > Prefs > Plugins > Output > DirectSound (out_ds) > config
and make sure your onboard sound chip (Sigmatel) is selected in the Device drop-down menu.

Also try checking/unchecking "allow hardware acceleration"

Go to: Winamp > Prefs > Playback
and uncheck everything in there (if anything was checkmarked).

If the CD problem persists, then we'll take things from there...

...maybe there's a conflict between Winamp\Sonic and some other running process?
(eg. one or more of: Creative Detector, Creative Service for CDROM Access, DVDIdlePro, NeroFilterCheck).

Why it crashed

Thanks for the attention, DJ Egg!

Hi,

I had had repeated Blue Screen of Death problems with new a computer's CD drives, nearly everytime I tried to play/rip an audio CD. I removed the controller card and one CD drive on it. That did NOT make any difference. Winamp produced bsod constantly.

You wrote;
"maybe there's a conflict between Winamp\Sonic and some other running process?
(eg. one or more of: Creative Detector, Creative Service for CDROM Access, DVDIdlePro, NeroFilterCheck)."

Trying to answer your post intelligently made me make some further tests & I found I had made a mistake in my first post. The problem was the Creative install. I offer this answer, in case someone else should have a similar problem.

The Creative player always worked, while everything else triggered a bsod (my Creative install is to make Zen players accessible: it loads the Creative player & requires WMP 10), which made me suspect the Creative install.

I said in my first post WMA worked, but I discovered in the follow-up tests that it worked only occasionally, while generally producing a bsod. It always produced a bsod if activated from 2x click on Explorer. = winamp was not the problem.

The install order, with rebooting & testing at every step should have been

<controller card>
(maybe WMA some version)
Creative
WMA out & reinstall

I think I may have failed to reinstall WMP 10 >>>>>>>>>> AFTER <<<<<<<<<<<< installing Creative, because -- probably -- WMP 10 was installed by the xp update process during the OS install process.

===>>>

WMP 10's presence -- or some other arbitrary version of WMP -- may be a precondition to installing some of the Creative software. OK. Further, WMP 10 definitely is a precondition to running the Creative software.

>>> BUT ALWAYS, after installing Creative stuff (my software was current with all Creatve updates & recommendations as of June 2006), if it went in AFTER WMA 10,

>>> remove WMP 10, reboot, and reinstall WMP.

The reinstall of WMP 10 seems to correct damage Creative does. Apparently Creative walks on some thing installed as part of WMP that every other program including windows itself -- in its updated form -- assumes will be present in a certain form. (Probably some sys file, bad/long outdated in it's Creative form.)
