Help! Error Syncing to Stream
I tried to do a search for this 'error syncing to stream', but couldn't find anything about it. Did a regular google search and saw there were a number of search results, but none of them were helpful. It almost appeared to me that there were a number of people that posted this problem, but didn't receive any response to the problem.
The following link http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/asp/asx.asp?listen=850 is the one that is giving me a problem. (could be more, but that's the one that I just tried) I'm able to play this link just fine in Windows media and Real Player, but not Winamp. On Winamp player I go to 'file' and then 'play url' and then this error happens before it even connects. Any help with this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks Alice |

Re: error syncing stream
Sawg, Thanks the link that you gave me it worked, but I'm still confused as to how you took the link:
http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/asp/asx.asp?listen=850 and came up with the link: mms://audio01.learfield.com/derrymon.asf I listen to Derry's show all through the week so I took the link you gave me and, substituting the last three letters that stand for the day of the week, was able to test all five days of the week and bookmark them in my Winamp. They all worked just fine, however, can't figure how to convert the 'Live' link of http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/asp/asx.asp?listen=848 Also, I listen to several different radio shows on the net. I don't understand how or where I should use the 'open location' (ctrl L). For example, I can right click over the live button on Derry's web site for the link to the live broadcast, but I get the link that I've shown above. How do I convert the link as you've done with Monday show? In other words, if the link on the web page shows what I have, how would I get to the 'mms://audio01.learfield.com/derrymon.asf' type of link? I really do appreciate your help with this. I really can't stand Real or Windows media and would rather try and figure out how to use Winamp for everything that I listen to on line. Thanks again. The second one is:
mms://audio01.learfield.com/trailer.asf Basically, the links return an ASX file. When giving just the URL to Winamp, it tries to play it as it is audio, but it isn't. If you browse to that URL, your browser should then open Winamp (or any other media player). | Brought to you by ^V ^C | The one... the original... no seriously! |

Re: Error syncing stream
Sawg, Thank you again for responding, but I've still got problems following this. (sigh) starting to feel a bit slow or blind at the moment.
Ok, first, I wanted to do some experiments with what you explained to me. I used Friday's show: http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/asp/asx.asp?listen=854 which equals: mms://audio01.learfield.com/derryfri.asf I put the first link in my browser and it did indeed open with Windows Media player (default). I searched all over Windows media for the link source and couldn't find a thing. Next, I opened Real and tried to look under clip properties, any source code I could find.... nada with seeing anything that resembled the working Winamp learfield.com link. I wouldn't be spending so much time with this, except I really do want to understand where in the world I find the link to the ASX file, being all the properties and all the sources only show the link: http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/asp/asx.asp?listen=854 I listen to a ton of other shows and don't want to bug people to find out what the ASX file is for each of them. I've got another question, why wouldn't Winamp convert it when I'm going to the 'Play URL' under 'File'on the player? Thanks again, hope you're not getting sick of me asking questions. Once I get this figured out, I won't be bugging you and asking probably dumb questions. :-) Alice The second one is: mms://audio01.learfield.com/trailer.asf Basically, the links return an ASX file. An easier approach would be to associate ASX files with Winamp.
Go to Preferences(Ctrl+P) > File Types and make sure ASX is highlighted, very bottom of the list. You should then be able to click on the Buttons/Links on the website and open the program directly in Winamp. To expand on what Sawg has told you Winamp can only handle music and playlist files. This link - http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/asp/asx.asp?listen=854 is not a file as such, but an instruction to the brownfield servers to send you a file, in this case a particular ASX playlist file(ID 854). You can only open this link from a browser, not Winamp. Now, when you connect, your browser will recieve the ASX file back from the brownfield servers and pass it on to whatever program you have associated with that file type, WMP, Winamp, Real etc. At this point Winamp is quite happy and knows what to do with the ASX playlist to start the stream. Once you have the stream playing you will see the actual address that the playlist contained by pressing <Alt+3> or double clicking the Songticker bar. This is the address you can put directly into Winamp. UJ |

I was at work, so the amount of explanation and testing I could was limited.
Basically, look at the URL. http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/asp/asx.asp?listen=854 That's a webpage URL. All the webpage actually does is return an ASX file instead. If Winamp is associated with ASX it should luanch Winamp (as it does for me). if Windows Media Player is associated instead, it will open in WMP (as it does at work). Now, say you give that link directly to Winamp, it doesn't see a specific protocol (MMS means Windows Media) or a specific extension (ASX for a Windows Media Playlist, WMA or ASF for a file/stream), so it has no idea what to do with it. The defualt action when Winamp has no idea what the file is, is to try and treat it as an MP3, which it is not. If you really want to open those links directly in Winamp try: http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/asp...isten=854&.asx The website doesn't recognize the part after the ampersand (&), so it ignores it. Winamp sees that and recognizes an Windows Media Playlist extension, so it treats it as such and loads the playlist. | Brought to you by ^V ^C | The one... the original... no seriously! |

Re: Error Syncing stream
Hey, you all are such a great bunch and sooo patient! The &.asx WORKED!!!!!!! I didn't have to work today and you probably wouldn't believe this but it's 10 pm and I've been trying to figure out this the ENTIRE day (since around 8 this morning). Between all the help I've gotten here, and doing google searches, I've learned more about audio/video files than I even had a clue existed.
I understood what you were writing about with regards to Winamp not recognizing the url file, but what's thrown me and I'm still puzzled, is how you located the learfield.com link... it's not even remotely close to the url link of brownfield??? I didn't mention it earlier, but I'd even read the entire html source code for brownfield.com. (fairly good size page and so it was a lot of code to read through.) At any rate, there is NO learfield link on that source code page (opened it in notepad so I should have been able to see it if it was there) Every one of the audio links inbedded in that source code page only linked to the brownfield url?? Then, I tried opening, one at a time of course, both Windows media player and real and playing the file doing the <alt 3> thing... never could find the learfield asx link. (maybe it has to do with the versions of real and win media that I have on my system) By the way, I also went into my options and made sure ASX was selected. Neither of these things helped. At any rate, the &.asx worked and I'm one happy girl... tomorrow I'm going to do some more experiments with other radio networks that I regularly listen to on line. My goal is to get the bookmarks in Winamp made for all the shows that I listen to regularly. I really do prefer Winamp as it plays back well for me. I'm on dial up and constantly going through buffering issues with both win media and real. Plus, both of those programs run so heavy, that it bugs me and slows everything down on my system. Won't even going into the almost spy ware issues with real. Again, thank you so much for all the help... I've learned a lot today. Alice |

I did it another way, but the simple way:
Right click on one of those lings and select "Save Target As..." It will save it as asx.asp. Open Notepad and use it to open the file. code: | Brought to you by ^V ^C | The one... the original... no seriously! |

Sawg, You're great! This is exactly what I was looking for... I went to bed last night with this bugging me, even though you gave me a good work around. I'm off to make a new folder in my computer for just the purpose of reading hidden links... Yipee, mystery solved for me. Thanks again. Alice |
