Winamp starts exceptionally slow

After installation of the new Winamp 5.21 it takes ages (well, at least a minute or so) for Winamp to start. It immediately shows in the Task Manager, but becomes usable only after about 60 seconds. If the 'equalizer' is selected, when starting it sometimes show only a blank 'regular' window titled 'Equalizer' and then after those 60 secs rest of the Winamp shows including a correct equalizer pane.

I used to have a similar problem with 5.12 version, but it was due to the selected 'Check for updates' as well as for 'Online services' - once I've disabled those it was starting immediately.

However, that didn't work for the new Winamp. At the end I did a clean reinstall (removing everything up to the redundant registry entries), but that didn't help either. It still hangs on startup even tho there are no third party skins or plugins, and everything that may postpone the startup is disabled.

With such a bad performance I'm forced to go back to v.5.12 which works flawlessly.

Any ideas?

Maybe it's because of the new Portable Media Player support...

You can test whether it's the new PMP plugin to blame by temporarily disabling it. It's the ml_pmp.dll file in the Winamp plugins folder. Close Winamp, go to the Winamp plugins folder and change the file extension from .dll to .off
You may need to configure Windows to show file extensions:
http://nunzioweb.com/misc/show_file_extensions.htm
To re-enable the plugin, change extension back to .dll

Maybe the plugin is looking for any connected devices, and for some reason this search takes a lot of time on your system...

If no luck, please provide system specs.

If you're bored go here or, if the boredom is more serious, here.

Bingo.
Works fine now. I should have guessed that this new feature might be causing the problem. It's probably because I do have Creative Zen drivers installed on my system, but since it wasn't connected I guess the plugin was attempting to find the Zen on startup.

Now, there might be a lot of users that do not keep their portable mp3 players non-stop connected, and if the plugin goes into an infinite loop trying to connect to the device and therefore produce a hang on startup, wouldn't it be wise to have Winamp looking for the device only when 'Portable' section in the library is accessed? Just a suggestion...

In either case, here are my system specs, might help the developers figure out why it occurs (although, as I said, I guess it's because of the Zen drivers installed and Zen not being connected):

MB: Abit IC7-MAX3
CPU: Intel Pentium IV 2.8c (w/ HT active)
RAM: 2x512MB Kingston HyperX
SC: Creative Live! Audigy 2 & MB's internal AC97
GFX: MSI NX6600-VTD256
OS: Windows XP SP2 (latest patches installed)
DirectX: 9.0c
Winamp install type: Full

And here is the HijackThis log:

I have this problem as well. I narrowed it down further. If you disable the pnp_njb.dll everything starts quickly. If it is enabled it takes 60 sec. Is this ever going to be fixed? I would like to use this feature, but disabling and enabling it every time I want to use it is really annoying.

Another problem, very close:
I have a SAN based drive letter with another copy of my library. Everytime Winamp starts, it scans >70 GByte of MP3, which delays the start a lot. Without the Plugin it starts immediately, but I would like the Plugin for my iPod.
Is it possible to exclude specific devices from being treated as "Portable"? Thanks for any help!
