ipod not showing up in portables

I just purchased a nice, shiny new ipod, and upon plugging it in and trying to sync it with Winamp, it didn't show up in the portables section of my media library. I've tried a re-install of winamp with no success. the only plugin that I'm using is the "winamp essentials" pack, and I'm running on windows XP. any help that can be given is appreciated.
