Trying to upgrade to 5.35 locks up WinAmp
I have a Dell computer, running Windows XP Service Pack 2 home, I use the free version of WinAmp to play FLAC files, that's all. I've never added any kind of plug-ins or bells and whistles to it. Just the basic, free, WinAmp software.
The last few times I launched WinAmp, it kept coming up with a message that I needed to download an update. Since the version of WinAmp I was using ... and I'm sorry, I don't know exactly which one it was, it had to have been one from the last year since the computer is 11 months old ... was working fine, I ignored it. But this morning, I got tired of seeing the dialog box pop up so I decided to upgrade. And that's when the problems started. I downloaded the program, ran it, did all the installation stuff that popped up, and clicked "run WinAmp." What came up was half the WinAmp screen, the top of it being cut off. The half that was showing was, basically, locked up. I had to go to Windows Task Manager and quit the process to make it go away. I uninstalled the software and tried to reinstall it, with the same results. Again, I had to go to Windows Task Manager and quit the winamp.exe process to make this stop. At the time I upgraded the program, the other software that was running was NOD32, my anti-virus; I think QuickTime may have been up in my tray, a program called NetworkMagic that I use to coordinate my home network and Dell's "Dell Support" software. Can anybody give me any idea what might be going on here, and how I can get a usable version of WinAmp back? I don't care if it's 5.35, as I said I use this to play FLAC files, nothing more or less. I've always had WinAmp on my computers and I've never had any problem installing or using the software until now. |

OK, in my haste yesterday because of time constraints, I did not notice all the stuff in the "read this first" sticky post that I was supposed to include in my post to get it noticed. I'm going to try to do that now and bump this up to see if it helps me in getting a response.
As I said originally, I have been using a version of WinAmp that I downloaded about July of last year, I'm not sure what version it was, it was the one that was "new" at that point in time, and it had worked fine for me in the limited situations in which I had used it, which was to play FLAC and occasionally Ogg files on my computer. For the last little while, when I'd launch WinAmp, it would throw up a dialog box telling me to upgrade to the newest version, I ignored it until yesterday and finally tried to upgrade, and since then that's been the end of WinAmp, I've tried three times to install it and it comes up with half the WinAmp screen and locks up the program to where I'm having to go to Windows Task Manager and exit the program. I am using a Dell desktop PC, Dimension E510. I have no clue what the motherboard is. I'm running Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2, and am up to date on all updates. I have a 2.4 ghz Pentium 4 processor and a gig of RAM. I did the thing to find out what version of DirectX that I'm using, it came back with 9.0c. I think I'm using a SigmaTel high definition sound card. That's what came up when I checked the hardware, I really never have paid any attention to what sound card was in it, to me it's basically "the one that came with it." I'm sorry, I'm not all that in to such things because I do not use my computer as a primary source of audio, I'm a Luddite I guess in that I still actually use one of those old-fashioned things called a stereo. I have no idea what video card I am using, I went to the control panel and checked the hardware that was installed and looked under video and it didn't specify any particular card. Again, to me "it's the one that came with it," and I've not pursued it any farther than that because I do not use my computer for playing video or for gaming. As I said, I was using whatever version of WinAmp was new in July of last year. I was trying to upgrade to 5.35. Both were the free versions, I really have no need for the paid versions. I had no plug-ins installed, zilch, nada, I have always just run the straight program. I've always installed it for shared users, although my wife is the only other person on the computer and has never used the application on her side, she does not listen to music at all on the computer. I downloaded and ran HijackThis. I have attempted to attach a copy of the log file to this post, but it keeps telling me that I'm trying to attach a file of the wrong type. I'm going ahead and sending the post, with hopes that someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong with the HijackThis as well. I'm running the program, it's popping up with the log in Notepad. I'm saving that log from Notepad as a text file to a spot on my computer and then trying to attach it using the attach file function here, but as I said it's telling me that I'm trying to save a file of the wrong type even though, as I said, I'm saving it as a text file. If someone can tell me what's going on here, I'll have a HijackThis file attached in a matter of seconds. There is one other bit of information that might be at play here after I finally did read the sticky with more care. When I launched the other version of WinAmp yesterday, there was still a playlist of about 20 Beatles songs showing, that I'd listened to the other day on WinAmp while doing something in an adjacent room to my computer set up. I don't know why it appeared because I normally do not save playlists, I never have put anything into a WinAmp library. My use of the program, I just call it up and drop a few songs in it, and when I'm done I quit the program and don't save anything. But somehow this time it saved. And I see in the sticky that if you try to install with a playlist floating around, it can cause problems. The thing is, it says to do something with the WinAmp MU3 file and I can't find one, there's not one on my computer anymore. As far as a clean install, I think that I have tried that, if I haven't, I would appreciation some direction here on that as well. After the first failed installation, I removed the program using add/delete in the control panel, and after that it popped up and said there were more WinAmp components remaining on the computer that I could delete manually. I went to Program Files, found the WinAmp folder and deleted it and all its contents. The next two failed installations, I have run a search after deleting the program, including looking in hidden folders, to find anything with WinAmp remaining in the name, any of the items it says in the clean installation instructions to delete, and they simply are not there. Hopefully, this will add more detail and maybe someone can give me some help as to what's going on here. Basically, I'd like to know (a.) why I can't install WinAmp 5.35 and make it work or (b.) how can I get the old version of WinAmp I had that did work back. Because this is way too much trouble for something that I don't use all that often. I've used Foobar before and I would certainly be inclined to try that again if I can't get this worked out, but the thing is that even though I don't use it that much, I've always preferred WinAmp. |

Hi,
to narrow down the possible causes of the freeze-up, I think it would be useful to try disabling some components of Winamp. To disable a component, change the extension of the relevant .dll file to .dll.off (you may need to configure Windows to show file extensions to do so) Or simply move the file out of the Winamp (plugins) folder. Components that you could try disabling: C:\Program Files\Winamp\primosdk.dll (that loads the Sonic Engine, which may cause problems if you have other Sonic software installed on your computer (e.g. Roxio) and in other rare cases) C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\ml_pmp.dll (that is portable media player support) C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\gen_ml.dll (that is the entire Media Library. By disabling gen_ml.dll you automatically disable all ml_*.dll subplugins. So if disabling gen_ml.dll fixes the issue, it is most likely one of the ml_*.dll subplugins to blame) If no luck, you could try posting the HijackThis log again. You can always just copy/paste the full log into a reply, if attaching the log won't work. |

OK, for better or worse since I can't attach it, here's the HijackThis log (on edit, I removed my real name from the file).

No but I tried something else and I now have a working WinAmp. I tried the classic window setup instead of the new one, and I unchecked Sonic and media player support when I installed, and voila, it works.
