cant hear anything

I just got a new computer with Vista. I took music files from a computer with XP, via a flash drive. They won't play in media player, so I was told to download winamp. After hours of frusteration, I FINALLY figured out how to make a playlist. Now I can't get the list to play. Or if it IS playing, I can't hear it.(yes my speakers are on) I have winamp as my player of choice, but still get no audio. PLease remember that if you reply to this, that you're talking to an idiot when it comes to computers. I can get your car running like a swiss watch, but not a computer.

I am having a similar problem with my audio files (.m4a to be specific) not playing also. Hmm.....
