Winamp Messing up iPod
Hello, battery life on my 3G iPod was getting a little short, so my friend recommended I restore it via iTunes. I did so and now Winamp version 5.35 is syncing my iPod very strangely.
When I renamed the iPod in iTunes that name didn't show up in winamp. Then, when I renamed it to what I had set before in winamp settings and then synced it and everything seemed to be working. The problem is the next time I attempted to sync the ipod, a playlist I had called alt rock, had suddenly become the name of the iPod. So my iPod is named alt rock and what I had named my iPod, "Mike's iPod" had become a playlist. I restored via iTunes and once again the same problems happened in the same order. I'm running XP Pro, by the way. Thanks for your help |

Hmmm, now I've realized everytime I open winamp and my iPod gets read incorrectly the files get messed up on iTunes. The iTunes error reads:
"iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod. Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Resote to restore this iPod to factory settings." So Winamp is somehow corrupting my iPod. This is very frustrating as I've restored and re-installed winamp 3 times now; does anybody have anything that might help? Last edited by sportsperson16; 7th July 2007 at 08:25. |

I have the same error. Winamp shows audio books,as the name of the ipod nano 4g. and if I change it, or add music, then itunes insists on a restore. winamp isn't seeing any music on the ipod. If I rename it in itunes it still shows audiobooks with a playlist called music, however the list is empty, even though the ipod isn't. and I am using the pmp_ipod plugin

Yes, that's exactly the same issue as me. It's listing audiobooks as the name of the iPod for me as well. It also lists the iPod as having 0 songs, even though it has nearly 14 gigs worth of music on it.
Now that somebody else has this issue it must be a problem with Winamp. |

I switched over to ml_pod, and everything seems to be working correctly now. I'd recommend you do the same.
It's not very comforting to see that nobody in the winamp community was able to help with our issue. |

people respond if they can and are around at the time to do so (i'm only doing so in response to your last comment since i don't have an ipod and so on a technical aspect am of no use with your issue). not getting a reply especially when it's only been 20hrs since the starting of the thread isn't uncommon and often can take longer (that's the fun of a free public forum).
as for the issue, people do seem to have different experiences with the ipod support with ml_ipod working better for some over the native plugin though neither should cause issues with the ipod from what i understand - maybe it's a quirk of working between itunes and winamp with the management of the ipod (is the best i can guess at) -daz |

The pmp dev is on vacation for another week.
I'll copy this thread over to the internal bugtracker and bring it to his attention when he gets back. If anything can be reproduced (if it hasn't already been fixed internally), then we'll try to get it fixed for the next release. |

I'd just like to toss in my "Me too"
4g Color iPod 20GB Winamp 5.35 Windows XP Pro SP2 I don't use Winamp to sync my files, only to play files from my iPod, so I haven't had any issues with damaging the files on the ipod. The files are present and working correctly on the iPod. The name of the device under Portables is showing up as Audiobooks with a playlist of Music listed under that. Nothing is showing up in the media library under the iPod. I sync my iPod with iTunes at home, and I'm not positive, but this seemed to coincide with my upgrade to iTunes 7.3. Winamp and iPod were playing nice previously. Any help is appreciated. Edit: Switching to ml_iPod 3.0 resolves this for me |

Hia, i'm having the same trouble here. I'm using a Ipod Nano next gen 8gb. I think it has something to do with the latest version of Itunes (7.3.1.3), because I had no troubles at all with the version before. Two weeks ago i transferred 4gb of music to my ipod using Winamp (with no troubles at all). In the meantime, I haven't changed anything regarding Winamp 5.35. Today I updated my Itunes and thats when the trouble started.
I also get the name "audiobooks" with one playlist music, which is empty. When i use itunes or for example mediamonkey i see all the music files (as i did in winamp), so they are still there. (oper. sys. = WinXp pro SP2) Any solutions yet, other then switching to ml_ipod? (which by the way definitely works: after installing ml-ipod, I can see my ipod again and can also transfer music with no troubles...: does this mean that the latest version of Itunes is incompatibel with winamps 5.35 build-in pmp_ipod) Thx in advance for any troubles! I am having the same problem, once i upgraded my itunes i can no longer access my ipod in winamp, it shows up named audiobook with a playlist called music, and doesn't show any of the music i have on there.
Going to ml_plugin did work for however i find that I can bring up the browsers ctrl+b when I am using ml_plugin, this seems to have been broken by the 7.x versions of itunes. My ipod is a 4gb ipod mini. Hopefully this gets fixed soon. |

Me too
Another one bites the dust...
I had the joy of my iPod 8gb Nano getting corrupted after updating and plugging it into Winamp. I am just glad that Windows still read it so I could copy all 7.8Gb of music off, reformat my iPod and then put the songs back on. I just lost all my play lists, ratings and play counts. So yeah, I hope this gets fixed soon because until then I am stuck with iTunes.

between this, and the media keys... am starting to get a bit disappointed in what used to be the absolute finest program of it's kind. with this ml_pod, when I double click on a song to play it in winamp, it opens an instance of winamp with the last song played, showing, I have to close that, then the one I wanted to play starts up, in a new instance. The Llama is starting to look better, than ever before.

win xp home / ipod gen2 shuffle /recent itunes / recent winamp
Just one more "me too" that the latest iTunes and winamp don't play nice together. After watching the programs duke it out generating error messages about the ipod being unrecognizable and or corrupted or needeing to be reformatted or reset, I was convinced that the ipod or its cradle were at fault. I decided to go in to the apple store front for tech support. The dude confrimed that the ipod was corrupted and he reset it on the spot. Then he demonstrated that the ipod worked fine synching the thing to his mac laptop. He insisted that itunes was the only software that he would consider as "supported". After that, I decide to surrender to apple and revert to using iTunes to manage my mp3's and to synch my Gen2 ipod shuffle. Reinstalled itunes ok. Opened winamp to see if that would operate as it used to. Things went haywire again. Now the ipod seems to be corrupted AGAIN, and I cannot even synch it using itunes. Error message from itunes: "ipod cannot be synched. the requirewd folder cannot be found". I despise iTunes and I'd like to use winamp with this device, but right now that seems impossible. (

I have a related problem. I have Winamp pro and a Nano that is recognized by Winamp (and things seem fine) and a brand new 80G iPod video that is not.
I have not installed iTunes and don't intend to -- meaning I really need to get this working. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. EDIT: I am using Windows XP |

I recently downloaded Winamp solely for the use of Shoutcast.
The iPod doesn't even show up under portables. No audiobooks or anything. My first broadcast starts on friday night and I need to put the songs from my iPod on to winamp. How can I get my iPod to show up? I only use it to play the songs from my iPod. The iPod used to show up on winamp but now it doesn't at all. Is there something that I am missing to get it started up again? |

Try reinstalling Winamp making sure to checkmark iPod support in the Winamp installer options.
Thanks to flocksoft for the screenshot. |

Tracklist order in my iPod nano
i don't know whether someone asked my question before...
i've got the iPod nano first edition with 4GB and since the last update of winamp i've this strange bug: if my ipod's connected to my pc while (only) winamp is running it seems that winamp resorts the tracklist of my ipod, that means that the list music/tracks in my ipod menu isn't sorted in alphabetical order (like before or when iTunes was running before disconnecting the iPod) but in a various order. i have to start iTunes before disconnecting my ipod to put this list in the alpabetical order again. It would be nice if someone's got a soluiton for this problem because it's very annoying to search through a list of about 900 tracks when they're not alphabetically sorted, especially if you're looking for a special track. Maybe someone could help me Thanks |

Best practice
For the record, I have never installed iTunes or Quicktime but my iPod Nano works perfectly with Winamp.
My Nano came pre-formatted for Windows - and it was recognized out of the box by Winamp 5.35 with the ML_Ipod plug-in from Sourceforge - which I recommend because it's got much greater functionality than the stripped-down version built into Winamp. I've got cover art, I've got Last.fm support and I'm very happy not to have any Apple software on my machine. Tech specs: Vista Ultimate 64-bit (and yes, Winamp still works fine in 32-bit mode) Winamp Pro 5.35 Last.fm for Windows 1.3.11 |

For Winamp's default Ipod support (pmp_ipod.dll) issue(s)…
Maybe give Winamp 5.36 Beta Preview 1 a try? Quote:

1. Install Mediamonkey (free app from www.mediamonkey.com) 2. Once in Mediamonkey, go to Tools>Options>Portable/Audio Devices and make sure all the sync options for ipod are turned off. 3. Connect the ipod, and right-click on the ipod icon in Mediamonkey. Choose "Rebuild device database". The process may take a few minutes, depending on the number of tracks. 4. Right-click on the ipod icon again, and choose Safely remove device. 5. This should restore the library as it was before. Then for winamp, I chose to install the ml_ipod-plugin instead, which solved the "Audiobook"-issue. Now the entire library shows up as it should! |

Dont use iTunes and Winamp at the same time. Use either one of the two!!!
Personally I prefer iTunes to sync my iPod, but that's the only thing I do with it. iTunes sucks as a player, Winamp is much better, not in th eleast because it allow to select a soundcard other the the default one (I use M-Audio Delta AP192 connected to my Stereo to play music via Winamp, but want my default sound-on-board to take care of my Windows beeps). So I synchronize Winamp Media Library with the iTunes libarary via a handy tool called iTLU (iTunes Library Updater). Then my iPod is synchronized via iTunes. This works perfectly. It would be nice if someone could develop a plugin that does the same thing as this iTLU tool. The advantage of working like this is: a) it works perfectly b) you can still use iTunse to make smart playlists Btw: I never buy music via iTunes: too expensive and the protection sucks. Good luck all. Winamp is really great!!!!!!! |

Joe, this is a great point.
I used iTunes only to update the firmware on my units. Uninstalled right after. MG |
