Freeze when scrolling playlist

When I play a group of files, (this happens with NIN-the Fragile; 23 mp3's and also with a roger waters double cd; 29 mp3's, haven't checked others) and the playlist is extended to show roughly 10-12 files at a time my system freezes completely when I try to drag the scroll bar down. This happens consistently with these conditions.
This does not happen when the playlist is only showing the standard four files at a time, I can drag the scrollbar up and down to my heart's content, noting that it will be trying to catch up with me as far as displaying id3 titles instead of filenames, with no problems. One time when it did freeze,(displaying 10-12 or so) it paused for a second while displaying id3's, pausing the music (I assume the whole system would have to hiccup to do this) and then resumed playing, but further scrolling froze me. It also froze once while extending the playlist from four files displayed, without touching the scrollbar.

I have an overclocked Celery 300 at 450 mhz (delicious)
64mb pc100
Trident v77 4mb agp with monster3d 4mb PCI accel.
Abit bx6 R.2 motherboard
5 gig maxtor diamondmax & 4 gig generic
Win98 Se v.4.10.2222 A
Winamp 2.72
(Does the same unoverclocked and with either directsound/waveout, all of this is with only winamp running)

Are you using any 3rd party plugins, particularly General Purpose?
If so, have you tried disabling them?

Does it make any difference if you change the settings in:

Prefs -> Options:
Read titles on Load / Display / Play
Sort files on load (toggle)

Prefs -> Plugins -> Input:
MPEG Audio Decoder -> Config -> Title tab:
Use ID3 tags / change tag display setting

Also, have you tried disabling the use of Smooth Scrolling?
1. Internet Explorer -> Options -> Advanced tab
2. TweakUI -> General tab
