Every time I use winamp, the C: window pops up. When I click on something else, it pops back to the front. The only way to stop it is to end task the winamp playing... and then end task Winamp (even though there's no evidence of winamp being used)
It's extremely agg******ng... On a related topic, how can I change what program a file type opens when I click on it? Like if I wanted to change it so sonique starts playing instead of winamp when I click on an mp3 (I think winamp is superior, but as it is now, I cant even use it) |

It all sounds very strange?
I'm not sure if I understand you here, but . . . Does Winamp actually appear when you open it, or is it just the C:\ Window instead? Can you open Winamp normally via the Desktop or Programs Group shortcut? Is this phenomenum only happening when you double click a music file in Explorer? Are you sure that the filetypes are properly registered to Winamp? (Winamp Prefs -> File Types) Your best bet would be to uninstall (via Add/Remove Programs) & reinstall Winamp. Be sure to backup your skins & extra plugins first. If applicable, also backup the bookmark list (winamp.bm) & saved EQ presets (winamp.q2) Though it would be best to try the default installation first. If everything is working ok, add your extras one by one, opening & closing Winamp inbetween. btw, all file associations are made via Winamp Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> File Types Deselect any you don't want to associate with Winamp here. Then close Winamp, and re-associate filetypes using any other player's similar options. (eg. Win Media Player -> View -> Options -> Formats tab) Any further problems, post here & we'll take things from there. |

can't get to prefs
when I click on an mp3, or when I put a music cd in, winamp pops up. the music starts, and a c: drive window also pops up on top. I can click, and do actions for a split second before the c: window comes back on top. wierd, isn't it? I'll reinstall winamp, but if you've any insight, I'd appretiate it. I run windows 98. I've got winamp, winamp sentinal (I uninstalled that, no change), sonique, and some funky thing called the Mjuice media player that someone must have installed.

And what does this C:\ drive folder look like?
Is it a normal Explorer window, or does it look like it could be the work of a General Purpose plugin? Are there any gen_*.dll files in your Winamp\Plugins dir? Again, does Winamp open normally (without this C:\ window) if you just open it from the desktop or Start Menu shortcut? btw, don't just re-install, uninstall -then- reinstall! This will then get rid of any erroneous code/settings/etc. You could always try restoring all the default settings by deleting the winamp.ini file from the main Winamp dir. Make sure Winamp is fully closed first. A new ini file will be created next time you open Winamp. Also note that Winamp should be closed each time b4 you remove any 3rd party plugins. After removing any such plugins, re-open Winamp & goto Prefs -> Plugins: Click "flush plugin name cache" button. When this C:\ Window opens, can you close it, or does it just come straight back again? Oh yes, and RE: Mjuice Media Player . . . This is a Winamp component. It provides support for Media Juice Files (*.MJF), which are a secure form of MP3. You can choose whether to install these components or not during Winamp setup. |

ok...
I haven't got around to uninstalling and reinstalling. There's a gen_sentinal in the plugins folder... but I deleted sentinal. the c: window is the normal explorer window. When I close it, I've a fraction of a second before it pops up again. same thing happens if I click -anywhere- besides the c: window. it's really odd...
btw, I couldn't flush the cache because I can't actually do anything to winamp because of the c: window. |

If you deleted sentinel, why is there still a gen_sentinel.dll file in your plugins folder?
Get rid of it & try again! You might also want to open the plugin.ini file (same dir) with Notepad & remove any reference to said plugin, plus any others you might have uninstalled in the past. Finally, open winamp.ini (main Winamp dir) & also remove any references to deleted plugins here as well. If all else fails, you can delete this file (C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.ini); next time you open Winamp (from the desktop or start menu shortcuts!), a new ini file will be created & all the default settings will be restored. Make sure Winamp is fully closed b4 doing any of the above. |
