Server for shoutcast

I want to know if the following would be good to run shoutcast streaming on:

Linux:

Intel Celeron 2.00 GHz
160 Go IDE / SATA2
256 Mem DDR
100 Mbps

if that would be good to run one shoutcast server on or would it be better to run a station and shoutcast server on the following:

Windows:

IV 3.00 GHz
250 Go IDE / SATA2
512 Mo DDR
100 Mbps

I would pput more RAM in the Celeron, then it should be fine for source and server for the normal number of connections that most people can carry.

Your mileage may vary!

Okay,

so you think 512 would work in the Celeron? also do you think that would be able to use the full 100 mbit or would the server start acting up?

You have a 100mb upload speed? I think I've read that it takes about 14k per connection. So if you take a 128kbps stream you would get about 100000000*0.80/128000=about 625 connections so even the 256 should be plenty for just the server. If you are doing the playing/encoding on the same machine I would definitely push it up to 512mb or more. Some of it also depends on the operating system you are going to use, windows XP really likes to have 512mb for a base level.

And as far as whether the computer can carry the full load of the 100mb connection, a lot of that will be up to the NIC installed.

Your mileage may vary!

As already discussed, much depends on the number of listeners that you think you will attract.

I agree that 256 MB RAM seems a little low. All of our servers, for example are fitted with a minimum of 1GB RAM with absolute minimum processing power of 2.4GHZ.

100Mbps dedicated is good - but which bandwidth providers?
