Analogue playback of audio CD

When i play an audio CD in my DVD burner it spins fast and noisy. I read that there's an option to play CDs slower.
I can't find this option. Winamp 5.5.

For analog playback...
  1. Winamp > Ctrl+P (for Preferences)
  2. Plug-ins > Input
  3. double click 'Nullsoft CD plug-in'
  4. uncheck "Enable digital audio extraction if possible" and "Use Sonic engine when possible"
  5. close out of Prefs > close & restart Winamp
Just unchecking "Use Sonic engine when possible" might slow down the DVD burner. In the past, I noticed in some earlier versions of Winamp use of the Sonic engine caused a "spin fast" issue while playback CDs. However, that was apparently corrected in later versions of Winamp.

Thanks. Found the option.
But it has no effect, dvd device still spins fast and loud.
Checked in Windows Media Player, here the option for analogue playback is dimmed.
Maybe my DVD RW can't do analogue playback?

I have a DVD ROM and the analog option in Windows Media Player is not grayed out. So, analog playback may vary with the DVD player/burner. You might want to try updating the drivers for your DVD RW.

I don't know if vista will let you use analogue playback at all(many computers these days don't have the analogue cable and many soundcards don't have the CD-IN or AUX input)

the alternative would be to purchase a quiet drive. like the pioneer XL series retail DVD burners.

How loud are they? And how do i know how much sound the thing makes before i buy it?
I like to listen to music now and then while programming but the awful noise is ruining it all.
Maybe there is some way to turn down the DVD speed?
