Problems burning in Vista

I have a fire wire external drive and an internal drive and they both behave the same.
I can't seem to find any other thread concerning this, so I assume I have a setting wrong, as opposed to a windows/winamp problem.
As soon as I click the burn button on the second dialog, I get a windows message saying the program had a problem and has to close.
If it makes it to the verify/prepare stage, sometimes it sticks on the checking disk stage directly after completing the preparing stage.
If it makes it the actual buring stage, it has never had a problem.
I have tried running winamp as administrator and still have the same issues.
I have burned 21 disks today. I got one of the above crashes on 7 of the first 10 disk burning attempts, sometimes two or three in a row. Then I burned 11 disks in a row with no problem at all.
Now, I can't burn any disk without the crash. At least 10 times in a row with a crash.
I have a one month old dell latitude d830 with vista business. I have the latest driver for my sony crx880A cd/dvd rom. I have a brand new version of winamp 5.51 that is only two days old and I have done the clean re-install once with no noticable change in behavior.
