Winamp fails when Active Sync is running

Winamp version 5.51 on Windows XP Pro

Problem: My company recently released the Microsoft Active Sync addition to XP to our network. As soon as I installed it and restarted, Winamp began to fail. I was able to start winamp up but it did not respond to any user input. After about a minute of sitting on top and not doing anything it would begin flashing. It would flash between Winamp's main window and the playlist window. The only way this stopped was to kill the process with Task Manager.

Solution: I went into MSConfig and disabled Microsoft Active Sync (WCESCOMM.exe), and restarted the box. This seems to have fixed the problem all together.

You could probably have just disabled Winamp's ActiveSync Support plugin by moving pmp_activesync.dll out of the Winamp\Plugins folder.

I'm glad that you mentioned that solution. After I installed a vpn client and restarted the box again I started having the same thing happen.

I removed the file as suggested and it instantly resolved the issue.
