Winamp crashes when adding new media to library

Hi everybody,

I've got a problem I can't find an answer to.

I'm using Winamp 5.51. The media library contains actually about 68.000 Files. I was trying to add new media, but winamp crashes while adding.
Re-installing wouldn't help.
My OS is Win XP home with all current service packs.
Do you have an idea, why this could be?
Thanks
Joerg

The only fix that works 100% on add-file failures

When adding a directory of files, version 5.5x can't seem to properly load any more than 100 or so before freezing or crashing. Above this it silently freezes the whole player and you have to manually kill it via the Task Manager. From what I read here it is a known program bug sorely is in need of a fix. A patch is apparently available but results are unpredictable in some cases. The file-add routine in 5.5x is also VASTLY slower compared to 5.32 and takes many hundreds of times longer to respond or process read even a small group of files.

For those who aren't perfectionistic early adopters and want things to "just work" this is a pain to deal with. The 5.51 upgrade was like downgrading to the mess that was 3.x ... same flakiness and general uncertainty that things would even work at the most fundamental levels like play/pause/add/etc because everything seems messed up. 5.5x & bento are visually decent, but they need serious improvement to basic functionality before I'll use them again. No point fishing for patches, really. I found this a bit easier to do:

- Remove 5.5x completely from system
- Reinstall Winamp 5.32 from a site that still carries it because you can recurse across thousands of dirs and files with no crashes or other issues.

YMMV. Worked for me, though.
