Audio Plug-ins

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering what you guys use as audio plugins for Winamp 5.51. I've noticed, at least on my player, that the sound quality is poorer now than any other version of Winamp that I have used. It's also much less clear and much more muffled than Windows Media Player.

Any ideas/suggestions on a kick ass audio plugin?

Take care

Winamp's audio sounds grate to me. Are you mainly noticing this with MP3/ACC files?
Winamp > Preferences > Nullsoft Mpeg Audio Decoder > Decoder tab > checkmark (or uncheck) 'Fast Layer 3 EQ'
Although not necessary, close and restart Winamp to ensure the change in setting takes hold.

Yes, these are all mp3 files that are odd. In notice this especially for 30 Seconds to Mars' 'Battle of One', the chorus sounds terrible on Winamp, but excellent in WMP. It sounds almost as if its whining and stammering a little bit. Not all songs do this, but a fair bit do, especially when the drums and guitars are going at the same time.

I checked, and later unchecked, the Fast Layer 3 EQ, and I toggled the Replay Gain settings, but to no avail. Any other ideas?

Try the DirectSound tweaks. No luck, please provide Winamp & system specs.

Tried the tweaks, to no avail. Listened to the same song again on WMP, and its crystal clear.

I attached the DxDiag file.

Although DirectSound is the generally recommended plug-in, you could try the waveOut plig-in instead of DirectSound
1. Winamp > Ctrl+P
2. Plug-ins > Output
3. highlight/select 'Nullsoft WaveOut Output'
4. close out of Prefs

Otherwise, please provide a List of Plugins and a HijackThis log. Information of posting a plug-ins list and HjT log in is the specs link.
