Winamp 5.52 keeps crashing my system

Hi all,

since I updated my winamp to version 5.52, it keeps crashing after a few tracks. It gets just stuck somewhere. When I click the [x] to close it, the content in all fields disappears but the window won't close. In Windows' Task Manager, Winamp looks normal, it isn't listed as "does not react". When I try to end that task, the task goes away, but the process (winamp.exe) is still there.

And when I try to end that process, it simply won't close!

Also, in that state, my computer refuses to open the Internet Explorer.

And when I want to shutdown Windows, I first get the message that Internet Explorer won't close, and after I close it manually, Windows won't shut down (I see the farewell screen, but nothing happens).

I tried: Uninstalling the last.fm Audioscrobbler and the Winamp Deskband, then uninstalling and reinstalling Winamp. Nothing helped.

System: Windows XP Professional SP2

Any idea what is going wrong and what I could do?

Yeah mine crashes a lot too,
Mine isn't constant though,

Sometimes it'll work fine, other times when I start it up, it crashes before I can do anything, and I have to try opening it as many times as I can, and hitting the stop button really fast...

Even then sometimes I can't get it to not crash.

I think I'm done dealing with Winamp because of it.
I'm going to windows media player, as much as I hate to say it.

No suggestions what I should try?

Do I really have to use another player? I really don't want to ...

yeah. I am also having the crashing problem. Pure Virtual Function Call Error. Never had this problem with older version. I found my old install for 5.21. installed it and now works great. Seems kinda pointless to upgrade to something thats just gonna crash.

Here's the other file now. I misread the instructions, thought it was for video problems only, sorry.

Hmm... I'm not rightly sure... but I'll take a guess at it being either a conflict with the Last.fm client and Winamp, or with iTunes/iPodService and Winamp's iPod plugin....?

Uninstalling last.fm was my first try, didn't help. I haven't used the iPod in ages on this machine, but I could try uninstalling iTunes ... should I?

Also, the problem seems to occur only when playing CDs. Winamp has been running smoothly for some hours now playing MP3 files ... could it be a problem with my CD drive or its driver? It's a "Samsung Super-WriteMaster".

Ahh, hmmm...

What settings are you using?

Winamp -> Prefs -> Plugins -> Input:
Nullsoft CD plugin (in_cdda) -> config:

1. Enable digital audio extraction = checked/unchecked?
2. Use Sonic = checked/unchecked?
3. Sample input from soundcard... = checked/unchecked?
4. Use MusicID = checked/unchecked?

Recommended settings = 1/2/4 = checked; 3 = unchecked

Though try unchecking "Use Sonic" and see what happens.

I doubt if it's a conflict between Winamp/Sonic and Nero... but you never know these days.

Hi DJ Egg,

settings were: all four checked. I unchecked #3 now and uninstalled iTunes. Time will tell if it worked ...

Thanks for your help once again!

Hmm.... weird.
Have you tried disabling the Sonic Engine?

Winamp will then attempt to use ASPI (if installed) or the native Windows SPTI engine for DAE (if no APSI present).

Is there a (Nero) wnaspi32.dll file in your Windows\system32 folder?

Is there any info anywhere (maybe in Windows EventViewer) about the crash?

Does it still happen if you use the default English lang in Winamp instead of the German lang pack?

Does disabling the tray Notification make any difference?
Bento -> Options menu -> Notificiations -> Never show

What view is active in the mini Multi Content View window at the top?
Is it the File Info view (Album art, Artist, Title, etc)?
Does it happen if you change it to another view, eg. EQ or settings?

Does disabling the Beat Vis and Spectrum Vis make any difference?

Does it happen with the Classic skin, or only Bento?

Oh boy, that's a lot of options!

I'll try them out and let you know!

No.

No.

I was using the standard Bento skin in windowshade mode, visualizations off.

OK, I think we're getting closer. I followed your suggestion and deactivated the Sonic Engine. I haven't had a crash since then, but now I keep getting error messages about one in three times a track is over and a new one should start.

The error Message:

"Fehler beim Erstellen des DirectSound-Puffers. Fehlercode: 80070057", which translates to "Error on creating DirectSound buffer".

When I click "OK" on the message box, the new song starts.

This could be a related error or a different one: While this error only occurs at the end of a track, the old one occurred in the middle of playback.

"Error creating DirectSound buffer" is a soundcard related error.

What's the sound card/chip?
Have you got the latest drivers?

start -> run -> dxdiag

Wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to load,
then click 'Save all information'.

Attach dxdiag.txt here.

What are your settings in:
Winamp -> Prefs -> Plugins -> Output -> DirectSound Output -> config?

Device tab:
Make sure your sound card is selected in the drop-down menu
Allow hardware acceleration should be checkmarked
Create primary buffer should be unchecked, unless your card is really old.

Buffering tab:
Reset to default values (2000, 500, 500)
Enable cpu usage control = unchecked by default, but try checking it.

Fading tab:
Old-style fade on pause = unchecked (but is required to be checked for some poor quality onboard chips and older cards).
on start, on first start, on end = all disabled
on pause/stop = optional
on seek = enabled (default 333 ms)

Other tab:
Remove silence = checked/unchecked? (default = unchecked)

If it's any help, I can reproduce that error playing CDs on my laptop with Sonic turned off. (SoundMax chip)

As far as I can see Winamp is attempting to use SPTI, fails, and after clicking away the error box, drops into MCI and continues to play until the next track change. No crash though.

If you add the following to your ATF string Winamp will show what playback method it is using
[ { %cdengine% }]
but maybe that won't be of any help if Winamp is crashing.

Putting the Nero 'wnaspi32.dll' in the main Winamp folder cures the problem for me.

Hi ujay,

where do I find that file?

I find several files with that name on my system (none in the winamp directory). Is ist the one in the nero core directory?

Hmmm... interesting.

@Ujay
Is that with 5.52, or the latest internal beta build?

@snorri
Yeah, try copying that Nero wnaspi32.dll into the Winamp root folder.
If that doesn't work, there's a slightly older Nero wnaspi32 available here

@ Egg, sorry not to get back sooner, just when I find a bit of time to look at these things Tiscali decides to goe tits up on me, typical.

Just had a look at 1856 and it's still there
OTOH the Spectrum Analyser is working with MCI now

A couple of other things that may be relevent is that SPTI appears to work in other apps.(not really sure how to find this, except they are independent of the Windows mixer) and there may be a problem with Winamp releasing the handle, the disc needs reloading to be found in other apps.

@ snorri, did you get playback with ASPI ?
