Gapless playback?

I searched & had no hits???? I read somewhere that Winamp V5.52 supports gapless MP3 playback. Is this true & is this feature included in the free version?

Yes. As long as the mp3 files you're playing were encoded with Lame 3.9x.

MP3 isn't a gapless format by default, and as far as I know, most (if not all) other encoders don't support gapless mp3 encoding.

For mp3's encoded with other/inferior encoders, you'll need to enable the 'remove silence' feature in the DirectSound Output plugin config.

Thanks for the reply. Now for a few more questions. I am mainly interested in listening to "continuous" albums, ala Dark Side of the Moon or live recordings like New York Rock & Soul Review. The listening will be with a Digital Audio Player. I understand that, if I don't need to skip tracks, I can rip a CD to a single MP3. Is there an advantage to this method? If I use WinAmp to create a gapless MP3 album, will it still be gapless when played on my Gigabeat T400? Also, Can I create a gapless album with WinAmp from a my existing library of MP3s that were encoded with LAME 3.9 to be played on my DAP?
Thanks so much for your help with this. If you prefer to direct me to a source of this info, that would be fine.
Thanks
kev

You can't rip to single file with Winamp, but as long as the CD was ripped with Winamp 5.52 (which uses LAME 3.97 for mp3 encoding) then the files will be gapless by default.

However, the MP3 Encoder is only available in Winamp Pro
(the only differences between the Pro & Free versions is faster ripping & burning,
and the mp3 & hi-bitrate aac+ encoders are unlocked in Pro).

You could rip to ogg or flac with Winamp Free, both of which are natively gapless formats.

I've no idea if your DAP supports gapless playback,
or whether it supports other formats (ogg, flac, m4a, wma).

Thanks DJ.
So the DAP firmware has to enable gapless playback even if I use WinAmp Pro to rip & encode the MP3s. Sounds like, for playback on my current DAPs, I need to look into ripping CDs to a single file where appropriate, 'cause my DAPs don't support ogg or flac.
