hi )

i'm writing this because i have this very weird problem. i tried everything to my knowledge, and nothing seems to work, so i'm hoping someone can help

i had to upgrade my audio drivers. after doing that, winamp 2.74 doesn't seem to re-register wav files after i select winamp to playback wav files. all other winamp formats are fine (mp3, wma, mp+, etc.)

at first, after installing the new drivers, wav files were reset to be played by windows sound recorder. after going to folder options and selecting winamp to play wav files, everything is ok and i was able to use winamp again to playback wav files. but if i reboot my system, the original settings default back to windows sound recorder to playback wav files. this never seems to end

i'm using windows 98se

is there a solution to this?

Associate Winamp with Wave files in the Preferences Window. Then, check "Maintain file associations" (in Agent) and "Register file types on start" (in File Types). This should work.

hi :)

hello and thank u for replying

i tried that, it didn't work. hehe i'm not kidding you, if i reboot my system, all wav files will be re-registered now as an unknown extension. it seems whenever you go to windows explorer --> folder options --> file types, there's a 'winamp media file' where the mime is audio/mp3

the wav extension is registered there too, its just that after i reboot my pc, the system simply doesn't register wav files with winamp, even though the wav extension is registered under the 'winamp media file' file type. if i try to create a new file type, WAV, it tells me that winamp already uses the wav extension, but it doesn't. i have to set it manually everytime after rebooting the system

i did uninstall winamp completely, and made a clean install under a different directory name, that didn't help

I can think of a way to fix it but are you used to editing the registry ?

:))

sure, no problem, i just had to remove all of virusscan's keys manually, so if you could please tell me how to get around this issue by making some changes to the registry, that would be fantastic!

if you need my email, its cherrycastle@gmx.net

Ok. Let's go.

Open Regedit.
Then, double-click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Under it, you will see a big list of all the file extensions that your computer can handle.
Scroll down the list until you find the .wav extension.
Highlight it, right-click it and choose "Remove". Windows will ask you to confirm the deletion, hit "Yes". The key will be erased which means that your computer is now "unable" to recognize Wave files. Close Regedit.
Now, in Windows Explorer, find one of your Wave files. While holding the SHIFT key, right-click it. A context menu will pop up and you should see a command called "Open With" (if you don't hold SHIFT, this command won't show so be sure to hold the button). Choose "Open With". Window should open a dialog box asking you what program should be used to open the file. Scroll down the list, choose "Winamp" and be sure to check the "Always use this program to open that kind of file" box. Click OK. In theory, all your wave files should now be opened by Winamp.
