mic problem Vista

Hi, im sorry to ask a question which has probably been answered but i have searched the forums over and over and nothing seems to fix my problem. And i'm starting to think im jinxed.

I want to use my new notebook for a home karaoke system just for fun.

I used to be able to do it on my old notebook which was a toshiba about 6 years old running xp however i can not get it to work on my new :

Hp Pavillion dv9500
running Vista Home Premium
running winamp 5.52

I want to plug my speakers into headphone jack and mic into mic jack on front of notebook and sing along to the music. However i get no sound from mic.

The mic DOES WORK. and i can record using sound recorder but NO playback with/without music. I can use linein:// and i get movement on the visualsation beat bar but no sound comes through however this would ultimately not let me play music at same time even if i could here the mic.

Please help
