mp3 files FF through file with no sound

I have been using Winamp for years and never had this problem: Files load and appear in the library window showing proper length and name. When play is activated the readout shows as if fastforwarding through the song but no sound. Same file opens in other programs including Windows Media Player, Wavelab and iTunes.

Did you set the DiskWriter output plugin as the active one? Open prefs -> Plugins -> Output, now select the Nullsoft DirectSound Output plugin and restart playback. You may also want to find where Winamp has written the audio to and delete it.
