Winamp must be stopped to play sounds online?

Today I was sent a Youtube video to watch, before opening the link I paused my Winamp to hear the video, not surprisingly. The thing is, when Winamp was paused I could her nothing, but when stopped the audio came in fine. This happens in both Firefox and IE and not in iTunes.

My computer is custom built
CPU: 2.13ghz Core2Duo
Mobo: gigabyte 965p-ds3
RAM: 2 gigs Corsair
Sound Card: Bgears B-Enspirer (new)
OS: Vista
Direct X Version: 10
Winamp version: 5.531
Winamp install type: believe it's full
Speakers: Logitech z5500

It should be noted that this is my first time using Winamp so I do not know if this would have occurred before hooking up the new sound card with optical.

1. Winamp > Ctrl+P (for Preferences)
2. Plug-ins > Output
3. try highlighting/selecting 'Microsoft DirectSound Output' instead of the kernel streaming plugin.
4. close out of Prefs

Errr... how about this instead, JM? ...

3. try highlighting/selecting 'Nullsoft DirectSound Output' instead of the kernel streaming plugin.

Let's not give Mr. Gates credit for something developed by Nullsoft.

Thanks guys, but if it's going to kill the 5.1 I will just have to deal with it.

Maybe the following will help...

From the Common Issues section of the Troubleshooters Sticky...

Multi-speaker output / surround sound support

Look through Sawg's post from link in the quote. Also, there is a recommendation specific to Vista there.
