Streaming from an FTP site.

Hey folks! I've been a longtime winamp user (i remember when the classic skin was the modern skin!), and have loved it ever since.

As of late, I have been getting into FTPing and have a site up that has pretty much all of my music library.

Now as most of you familiar with an FTP site knows that playing an individual file remotely via web browser is a simple point and click, as is saving or opening that individual file.

And of course if you are using a client then you can do whole folders and what now.

As my education in this has progressed, it came to be that i wanted to stream an entire folder. My first thought was to create a playlist (.m3u) of all of the songs that i wanted to listen to and then browse from my remote computer to my site, click on the .m3u file, and tell it to open in winamp and everything should be cake...

Well what happened was I when I click on the .m3u playlist file, it opened up winamp as it should, but it scrolled through all of the files (about 36) in roughly 3 seconds and didn't play a sound.

So what i am hoping is that someone can tell me what I did wrong, and perhaps tell me how to get it right.

When i set up the m3u file, i did it on the ftp server where the music is stored. I opened the playlist editor, clicked make new playlist, and the placed the files into the playlist and then saved it as "file name.m3u".

I know the playlist file works cause i was able to play it locally, but that kinda defeated the purpose of streaming remotely.

Oh and for the record, as it stands right now i don't want to get into a shoutcast server right now. I want to keep this as basic as possible. Just simple FTPing. I know that it can be done as i have read others who have done it, but can't seem to duplicate what they have done (one website actually wanted me to pay a fee just to have the privilege of looking at their answer...)

Thanks for reading this, and I look forward to reading your responses.

(oh and if this is a duplicate post, my apologies. This is a very extensive forum. If it is duplicate, then please link the proper place for me to go!)

Hi. Alas FTP Streaming Support hasn't been implemented yet.

It has been on the wishlist for a few years though...

You could try this workaround.

ahhh, well that would explain why every time i go to an FTP site and stream something it doesn't stream...

So even after 10 years winamp doesn't support something that predates HTTP...

That's funny!

Are there any other media players that would?

Thanks for the post, i'll check out your solution and let you know the results!
