Crash During Media Library Scan

Hi,

Every time I try to scan my media library, 'File'-->'Add Media to Library...', WinAmp crashes. I've checked other posts in this forum along the same lines and followed their instructions, but they've been no help in rectifying my issue!

I'm running v.5.531 (x86) and I've tried a thoroughly clean install twice, cleaned the registry too, but the same error keeps occurring every time. I first thought it was the size of my library, 126Gb, but all signs point to a plug-in.

I've attached the HJT and plug-in list logs to this post, as well as a copy of the Windows error report for the crash: it says it's nde.dll that's causing the crash, and other posts say that gen_ml.dll loads this, so what's the deal - is the plug-in that reads my library corrupted or something?

Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem on three different PCs.
One, with Windows XP Pro has a registered copy of Winamp, the other two, with XP Home have a freeware copy. All are latest version, installed bare-bones, no extra plugins installed.
On all the PCs I have the same library of about 30 Gbytes. When I rescan to add a few new pieces (e.g. a new CD ripped) everything goes well. When I rebuild from scratch the library
a Winamp crash occurs ant the message attached appears.
The only - very annoying - trick that I found to overcome the problem has been to start scanning, let it go for 1 minute, then stop. Then re-scan for 2 minutes then stop. An so on one more minute at a time... Its seems that the problem is in building a brand new library from scratch or increments of a huge number of pieces. Incremental with a limited number of songs is ok.
I noticed this problem in Winamp 4.x and I hoped that V5 would fix that problem... No way :-(
Anyone else has experienced a similar problem?
Thanks for your attention.

Rescan vs Add Media

My issue is similar. If I add new media to the library, all goes well if I add the 6 watched folders one at a time. If I rescan the library, it will run for awhile then crash. Collection is upwards of 120K files.

Is the process somehow different between adding media, and rescanning media?

Thanks,
Rich

I have found the mp3 patch to be the solution to my problems: http://stashbox.org/44502/Winamp55_MP3_Patch.exe.

It was a solution posted in various other threads (like this one), so thank you to those folk! I'm now running v.5.54 and neither the library scan nor the Playlist Generator crash for me anymore. Woo!

Perhaps a combination worked for me. I installed 5.5.4. It still crashed. I removed the drive where it crashed. It didn't crash. I rearranged the files on that drive a bit. (used to have 3 major sub folders, only 2 of which I wanted in the library.) Moved that 3rd folder to another drive, so that i wouldn't need to add the 2 watched folders separately. Now, I have 5 watched folders (each on a different drive and only a single subfolder deep "J:\MP3"). No crash so far.

/me keeps fingers crossed...

thanks for the heads up!

Well, it worked once. But only once, every other time I tried to rescan the library it crashed. I guess I'll start hunting for bad files, although, I find it hard to believe that's why because I can add all the media to the library, but just can't rescan.

The hunt continues. I've tested all my files using MP3Val. I found thousands of bad files. Fixed or deleted them.
I still get crashes. I can add drives one at a time and it won't crash. It crashes only during a re-scan. So I have to ask, what is the difference between a RESCAN and a MEDIA ADD?

Confused and Frustrated

Rich

ps. This morning, I added each drive (J,K,L,M,Q) one at a time to the existing ML. Performed a removal of missing files. No crashes. I just performed a rescan. No crash. I added 2 more albums on the same drive, and removed one. Each in separate folders. Rescanned caused a crash. I added the drive that contained the new folders with no crash. I rescanned. No crash.

Hope this makes sense and is helpful.
