Files changed won't play
I record with an H4 Digital recorder to .wav files. I have several on my hard drive where I installed Winamp.
Winamp seems to have altered these files so that they will no longer play either on Winamp or Windows Media Player. How do I return them to the correct format? Dick |

winamp will never change any of your files unless you specifically told it to, and most of the changes winamp can make are stored in metatags(wav's don't support meta tags so there would be no changes)
also, as far as I know unless your using format converter(and deleting the original) I can't think of any way a wav file can be changed by winamp. winamp is just a player, its not an editor, it doesn't just go and change your files ever. if I were you i'd check your machine for malware and virii. |

Files won't play
Rocker,
All I did was install the program, and all the audio files in my folder became unplayable. I've got the full version of AVG virus protection, it is up to date, and a scan of the drive didn't show anything. I did a standard installation of Winamp, launched the program, and nothing would play. So I launched Windows Media Player and nothing would play, and I got an error message that media player didn't know how to play that type of file. I did a search of the web, as suggested by Media Player, but nothing turned up. It is still a wav file, but it seems Winamp has installed some Codec that windows doesn't jive with. Fortunately, I have everything but one file backed up. Of course the one file not backed up is critical to a project I'm working on. I uninstalled Winamp, and it still wouldn't work, so I reinstalled Winamp, but no luck. Any additional suggestions will be welcome. Dick |

Sorry, but as Rocker said, it's not possible for Winamp to cause such a problem.
Winamp doesn't install any system codecs and doesn't modify any existing system files or drivers. Winamp comes with its own decoders (input plugins) such as the Nullsoft Waveform Decoder (Winamp\Plugins\in_wave.dll) which doesn't modify any files whatsoever. Also, as Rocker said, WAV files don't support metadata, so you can't even edit the file info for .wav files with Winamp and therefore there is no way possible that Winamp could've been responsible for editing/changing/corrupting your .wav files. The problem can only have been caused by something else, and it was just a coincidence that you installed Winamp at or around the same time. You could attach a zip containing HijackThis log, dxdiag log and my_plugin_list.txt log, and also provide a download link to one of the problem .wav files: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#specs |
