Winamp 554 crashing
My first post. Hello all.
I have one plugin - Streamripper. I unplugged it but these crashes have begun before I activated this, anyway. I am concerned it is a hardware problem. Typically I open a folder of mp3 files for playing in the background. This multiple selection seems guaranteed to give me the message Winamp has stopped. Control panel and problem reports and solutions gives no clues except a long list recording winamp stopping. Starting individual files seems to reduce the occurrence of crashes, but does not stop it. I thought it was a legacy game which was doing it, but this problem occurs with just Winamp running. The last crash was just 5 minutes ago. I was running a folder which never used to give any problem, then I stopped the Play option, and started up Shoutcast, which crashed it. My hardware should be able to cope easily, but I Do have Vista Home premium. Due to multiple problems with Winamp I installed the latest version 554, into the Admin account, rather than my user account. Starting up with the Admin password does nothing for it. My virus checker is AVC Free 8.0. I have never used the media library, or created a playlist, so does any of this seem familiar to other users? Thanks, I like using Winamp, and I am for sorting it out rather than giving up. |

Yeah, you will likely find that the crashes will continue for as long as you try to use Winamp and Windows at the same time. To give you an example, I have multiple computers in my house (as the result of being a Systems Engineer). Of the computers running Microsoft OSes in the house:
Main XP Box: suffers an unrecoverable winamp driver failure if I attempt to connect to the PC via remote desktop requiring a complete system restart. The only time this computer ever gets power cycled is when winamp crashes. Aside from that, under normal operation, winamp will crash every few hours if its using its play list feature in any way, but not the same level of unrecoverable driver failure TV XP Box: The media centre PC will completely lock up if its trying to playlist movies using winamp. 1 movie is fine, the movie change causes a lock up only a reset button has the answer for Notebook 1: Constant crashes while doing intensive tasks such as playing MP3s Notebook 2: normally crashes before the end of the first song queued, regardless of whether there are more in the play list (currently updating that one from version 5.52 to 5.54) 2k3 Server: Has had winamp removed to restore stability. I think it should also be noted that aside from winamp, and sometimes Internet Explorer, these systems are 100% stable. all of these PCs are running vanilla versions of winamp as I don't own any ipods that I might need extra plugins for. Fortunately Windows Media player seems to be bringing is design closer and closer to that of winamps, which is good because Media player tends to play mp3s 99% of the time without issue. VLC player is showing some promise as well, having never personally experienced a crash there (since VLC runs on all of my PCs now, my Mac and my Unix boxes) My point here is that I am using a lot of different hardware and fairly rock solid configurations, and the only real common link between everything is a) Winamp and b) Windows. Further analysis should suggest to you that if a) Media Player and b) Windows which perform basically the same task, work fine, then we should be able to narrow down the list of faulty software to: Nullsoft Winamp My point is, don't waste you life blaming your hardware. Just know that every time you patch a piece of software, you will inadvertently add more bugs. Winamp is the only product I am aware of that receives more frequent updates that Adobe Acrobat. That in itself should tell you there is something severely wrong with the software, and there is: it requires a complete re-write to prevent its constant crash bugs. |

I have been experimenting with playlists, and they seem more stable than selection by folder.
However, When using Windows Mail, I was trying to access posts to a Newsgroup and the program froze, while Winamp (Playing in the background,)stopped. After what seemed a minute, both programs restarted where they left off. After a couple of minutes it happened again. Is it required for me to post details from Hijack? Will that help? |
