554 hanging during setup "(Downloading 261% completed)"
My installation seems to go fine, but then when winamp tries to start up, it pops up a "Winamp Setup" window and hangs with a progress bar reporting "Downloading... (261% completed)". Really! "261%"!
Haven't seen anyone else reporting this one. Any ideas what's going on? I am behind a corporate firewall, but generally haven't had trouble with simple downloads. I've uninstalled all prior winamp apps, rebooted, re-downloaded the installer. Same thing happens. I'm running XP Pro SP3, IE7. Thanks for any suggestions! |

Hmmm... bizarre
And NO errors during installation? Eg: Winamp can not access "whatever" file for writing And the installation supposedly completes with no error, and then, at the end when it asks you if you want to start Winamp now, that is when it pops up a "Winamp Setup" window and hangs with a progress bar reporting "Downloading... (261% completed)"?? Very bizarre. Try 1 of 2 things...

Yup, no errors on installation. Thanks for the suggestions, Nunzio. I had already tried running from the fully downloaded file, and then not launching until the installer was completely done.
Never had a problem installing Winamp from work before... But here's an update: When the setup dialog is shown (for selecting a skin, file associations, etc.) I canceled out, and selected "Yes" for "Save settings?". This at least gave me a winamp.ini file. Then I added these lines to the [WinampReg] section: IsFirstInst=0 NeedReg=0 So this seemed to get me up and running, tho' Lord knows what I'm missing by not downloading the remaining... er... -161%? ... of whatever it was trying to do. Any idea just what is downloading at that time? it's just after user registration is sent. |

Update on my update:
While I can play local music, I can't access my remote music. I initially get the remote client in the browser/content pane, but it soon goes blank (white) and then (occasionally) winamp crashes. I'll try an install on a less secure network when I get a chance. |

I'll still suggest though that when you are home to download the installer onto a USB stick, carry it to work, and then rerun the installer, just to be on the safe side. Corporate firewalls are unpredictable and changes could have been made to it by management that might be causing an issue now for you whereas it never did before. [EDIT] Ehh! I just now saw this reply, which I hadn't seen when I initially typed my above response to you... Quote:

At a guess, it's one or both of the "Winamp Remote" or "Winamp Toolbar" options on the "Get the most out of Winamp" page of the installer options, seeing as if either of those are kept checkmarked then it downloads them externally from download.nullsoft.com (i.e. the installer setups for those two items are external and not included in the Winamp installer).

Oh yeah... the firewall may be blocking access to installation via the external site.
Good pickup, Egg! In which case, bringing the installer in on a USB stick means nothing unless those 2 options / features are left UNchecked during installation. |

To close out this thread, I finally managed to get Winamp installed. When an earlier version that had previously installed fine no longer would, I became suspicious of what might be running in the background, blocking the installation.
After killing most any process or service that didn't look critical, I was finally able to install Winamp just fine. Don't know what it was (SQL Server? Subversion? VPN client? ClearCase credential monitor? Acrobat's let-me-lurk-and-hijack-your-system agent?) Now I just need to figure out how to get through our firewall for the remote access. ![]() Thanks for your help, Nunzio and DJ Egg! |
