Media Library freezes when I add stuff.

When I add the folder containing all my music in the library and it reaches 37% it always freezes up. To be fair It does the same with media monkey.

There must be some kind of file that makes my Winamp fail!

Could anybody tell me what it could be and how to resolve it?

Well, I'd say that at least one (or possibly more) of your media files is corrupted, causing freezing in both players, in which case you'll have to add just a "bit" at a time in Winamp, until it does freeze to find the "culprit", and then remove the corrupt file.

But then again, you never said what version of Winamp you are using. Currently (as of the time of this post) the newest version is 5.54 and there were freezing/crashing issues in earlier 5.xx versions when adding media to the Library (a temp-fix in_mp3 update patch was available then), but those crashes have since been addressed and no longer occur. So, even "corrupted" files shouldn't cause a freeze-up or crash now when adding to the Media Library with the latest version of Winamp.

So... do you have the latest and greatest Winamp version?
If not - install it!

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm afraid I do have v 5.54 .

That means I have to go through 950 gb of music . I remember a mp3 checker though, it checked all you files to see if they were corrupt.

Any more ideas?

Update: I tried mp3 checker but it too got stuck! Maybe it's some kind of virus.

OK. So you have the latest version. In that case I'll just quote from myself again...

You think it might be a virus? Well that's possible, but I think not, due to the fact that you initially said it consistently freezes when it reaches 37% while adding files. So that implies that a particular file is corrupted and unreadable at that point and is why I suggested the first thing (quoted above).

But... in case it is a virus, you can read my response here --> corrupted mp3 files....

Understand though that the virus mentioned there causes problems with playing the file(s) and not while adding files to the ML. But anything is possible with a virus.

OK. Very good!

I assumed then that you just added a bit at a time to find the culprit - correct? Or was it the virus?

In any case, try and apply the fix linked to here by DJ Egg and see if you can "repair" that one damaged/corrupted file. Let me know if it works for you. I'm curious as to whether or not that file was infected.
