I have downloaded both of these programs on two different
computers and tried to install but keep getting the error message "Installer CRC invalid" It installed and works fine on my Win98SE machine but keep getting same error message when trying to install to Win95 machine. Is this a problem with my hardware or with your software? Thank you |

I get the same error, I have tried downloading it again like it says in the FAQ, but to no avail.. I've had this problem in the past and it's probably because my computer is full of viruses
![]() Does anyone know if the latest version of Winamp is available in .zip format for those of us who experience probs (from viruses or otherwise) ?? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer ![]() -Az edit: Maybe this is a point to consider, having a .zip version available when you go to the Download page? Just a suggestion of course ![]() [Edited by Az on 04-19-2001 at 12:53 PM] |

Ok, here is what I did:
1) Got mad 2) Deleted some nice mp3s so I'd have *just* enough space for a virus scanner 3) Spent ages downloading a virus scanner (at less than 2.5k per second....!) 4) Installed the virus scanner 5) Restarted the computer (*yawn*) 6) Ran the virus scanner and watched it report a few hundred instances of win95.CIH on my computer.. Did i mention it's my sister's computer? (ignoring the "Disk space clean up" nonsense that Win98 sent me)7) Realised that I had to *tell* the program to actually remove the viruses, not just report them. 8) Fiddled around with the scanner's options, then set it off again... watched as it fixed one file and then crashed. 9) Switched off the computer 10) Switched it on again, damn, didn't wait long enough, repeated 9) & 10) 11) Ran the virus scanner again (ignoring the "Disk space clean up" nonsense that Win98 sent me..again) 12) Spent over an hour having the scanner remove the virus from my system (which meant missing out on over one hour of valuable net time) 13) Got back online & downloaded Winamp *yet* again..reminding you that 2k/sec is ...well... 14) Ran the Winamp installer..... ..... ..... 15) Got the "Installer CRC Invalid" error again 16) Came here and moaned about it. *sighs* That's an awful lot of time & trouble just to upgrade one program. (not putting any blame anywhere of course, just saying) -Az |

This means that the CIH virus is still resident in either DOS or memory.
Try this little program (less than 25kb) to fix it c/o http://www.pspl.com/download/cleancih.htm Please note, it needs to be run from the DOS command, not Windows. Read the accompanying txt file for full details. btw, which virus scanner did you download? eg. InoculateIt (freeware) should have cleaned up your entire HDD. Make sure you have the latest signature DAT files (For InoculateIt = http://antivirus.cai.com/update.htm), and make sure you configure it to scan & clean all files / memory / boot sectors. |

you really wanna get rid of CIH or you can kiss that computer good by. Winamp is doing you a favor. (It throws a CRC error on purpose because of CIH).
Make sure it is ALL gone. do what Eggy said.

Thanks DJEgg, I downloaded that program.. Hopefully now my computer is ok, winamp installed good, so thanks again!! ![]() Appologies for my moaning.. I got really frustrated.. And it's rediculous how these virus scanners can say your system's clean when it isn't..anyway, that's a very long rant that I won't go into ![]() thanks, Az |

CRC is not b/c os virus. It's because you are missing some bits of the file you are downloading, it most often happens with dial-up users since many bits can get lost in the slow transmission. Try downloading offpeak hours. If anyone bothers to check, CRC is like a checksum for the file, and has nothing to do whether you have a virus. You having a virus was just a compliment to the incident. It's even happened to me once (CRC error with Cable!!), and redownloading did the trick.

voltron: The installer checks for CIH and will throw a CRC error if you ahve it. CIH messes with any new files comming onto your computer, which alters the CRC for the installer and will cause the error. So if you are 100% sure you have a complete and good download it is a sure sign of CIH.

to be more exact: CRC check is supposed to detect ANY modification made to the installer exe; all viruses that mess with exe files cause CRC checks to scream.

"Installer CRC invalid"
I'm so glad you people solved -AZ's problem but I am still in total darkness. I downloaded "cleanCIH" and ran it. Knocked off 136 of those little devils. Then installed "InoculateIT" and ran it. Totally clean harddrive.
Restarted computer and clicked on Winamp and - You guessed it. "Installed CRC invalid" I have downloaded Winamp on four {4} separate occasions at different times of the day and night and none will install. All four got the same error message. Should I resign myself to the fact that I will have to go Winampless or do you folks have another idea? Thanx, in advance, for any and all input. Larry |

CRC error
Ok, i just tried to download and install winamp274_full.exe and was given the "Installer CRC Failed" error.
i scanned my disk with both InnocualteIT and cleanCIH, both of which drew a blank. Im am running Win2000 Pro nad have retried the dowlnoad three times with the same result. Am i downloading a win9x only version by mistake? if so where is a win2k one, or is there something else causing the problem? Thanks --Farkenhell [INSERT] never mind, i just got it from a mirror and it worked fine... weird. l8r all |
