Seems tons of people aren't reading the forums/searching and are flooding them with duplicate threads not following protocol, making it less likely this one that is will actually get answered :P

I know there's a ton of these threads popping up, but I thought it would be useful to note that I don't use AVG on my computer, so that can't be the cause.

i fixed it when i got home from school today.

all you have to do is uninstall winamp, then delete all the files from the program files folder. then reinstall it. thats it!

Yeah, I did that. That's part of the clean uninstall/reinstall process, it's actually the first thing i did. I also even deleted the winamp folder from "Application Data". Still crashes upon launch.

you may need to wipe winamp from the registry also.

It specifically says not to mess with the registry and that it is unnecessary in the FAQ.

I hope someone can help me out on this, because I have a large music collection on my computer that i'm used to listening to all day, and windows media player really doesn't suffice.

"It specifically says not to mess with the registry and that it is unnecessary in the FAQ."

Yeah, that's what they tell people on the backs of tape players and radios. No user serviceable parts inside. Do not attempt to open. Right. What they want you to do is pay money to have someone else fix it. Everyone should learn to do simple repair jobs on things, including computers. Be careful, of course, but don't get intimidated.

It is risky to mess with the registry unless you know what you're doing (have an expert show you rather than just doing it themselves and charging you $50). But it is not risky to clean it. I suggest you get a copy of Ccleaner, uninstall Winamp again, and run CCleaner before reinstalling winamp.

I had this same problem two days ago. I uninstalled winamp and reinstalled the next earlier version. It worked fine. Today, I uninstalled that and reinstalled the latest one, and it is working fine now. I did not do anything special to it, but I did notice that AVG had run a virus scan, so maybe it caught something. Now if I could just fix the problem with my bookmarks that simply! ETA to fix HTML.

I'm not an idiot so i'd appreciate it if you didn't treat me like one. In fact..

Winamp itself does not store any info in the Registry, except for the (encrypted) Winamp Pro key (if registered). The only things written to the registry are by 3rd-party bundled apps such as: Gracenote MusicID/CDDB & Sonic Burning Engine, both of which are auto removed by uninstalling Winamp, and the optional items on the 'Get the Most out of Winamp' page in the Installer: Winamp Remote (Orb Networks), Winamp Toolbar (AOL), Emusic Offer, all 3 of which have separate uninstallers in Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Anything else stored in the Registry is related to Filetype Associations, all of which are handled by Windows. Although an uninstall takes care of this, you can remove these registry entries without uninstalling by just going to: Winamp > Prefs > File Types, and clicking the "None" button.
I don't use Winamp pro, neither did I have any 3rd party apps, and I opp'ed out of the optional items. I don't think Filetype Associates have anything to do with it, in fact i'm nearly sure of this. I'm posting here because i've already gone through all the logical steps, and it's not working, after working for months. Also, I don't use AVG.

Sorry. Yes, I saw where you said you didn't use AVG. That's why I suggested Ccleaner (thinking that something else could have gotten damaged or messed up, no virus involved, but somehow interfering with Winamp and causing it to crash) but you probably already have run a registry cleaner anyhow.

It's clear you have a different problem from most of the people reporting the crash on startup thing. This is an extreme longshot, but I'm wondering if it could be your memory. Do any other programs besides Winamp crash on you or behave strangely?
