Vista-Advanced Vis Studio-Desktop overlay?

I searched for "vista visualization overlay" and got no results, so sorry if this was previously discussed.

In versions of Windows before Vista, it was possible to have the desktop background set to show the same as the Advanced Visualization studio by enabling Overlay mode and Set Desktop to Color. In Vista, this does not work. If it's possible to do the same thing, could someone post details? Thanks.

This thread is about the same issue:

AVS hasn't been updated (ish) for a long time, so I can only assume it has some issues with vista.

vista doesn't support hardware overlay at all.. it only supports EVR.

this is also the reason why video's run badly on vista for any player except windows media player.

That really sucks, because I finally got a computer that runs AVS well, and I can't run it the way I used to in overlay mode.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is EVR?

So now I can't record what goes on my screen, meaning I can't turn AVS or whatever else I'm playing into a DVD?

Well for AVS you should still be able to use AVSGrabber (bottom of the page) to capture the output.
